FTUI Students Design a Transition Energy Generating System

Three students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) designed a renewable energy system by utilizing several available energy sources in coastal and sea areas. Thanks to the design of this renewable energy system, Mellin Hasna Nurfadhila (International Industrial Engineering Program 2020), Rubby Anistia Prasetyo (Civil Engineering) 2020), and Aldrin Irsyarasyid (Civil Engineering 2020) achieved 2nd place in the Smarter World Innovation Challenge (SWIC) T20 2022 competition.

This renewable energy system designed by the FTUI team has great benefits and can also last a long time. This system utilizes wind, tidal, wave, and generating units, especially wind wave energy utilization devices’ coaxial rotation. This transitional energy design is named Fluidon and is expected to become an energy source on an industrial scale in the future.

“This idea emerged when we visited villages in Pangandaran, West Java, which was designated as underdeveloped villages by the Ministry of Villages in January 2022. During the visit, we saw the potential for the swift flow of water in the irrigation canals. In addition, we also observe that fishing boats only use sea waves as a natural engine. From here, we were inspired to design Fluidion which can be a solution to exploiting the potential as well as a solution to the problem of energy needs,” said Rubby.

Fluidion: Fluid Motion Energy System consists of a wind power cab, wind blade, generator, wave energy blade, anchor chain, seabed, alternator shaft, generator, and connecting rod. The system adopts a horizontal-axis generator design by integrating an overtopping device to stabilize waves and uses wind energy blades. Besides being a transitional energy system, Fluidion can also develop into ecotourism.

Dean of FTUI Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, expressed his appreciation to the students. “Fluidion is an alternative solution to the use of available natural energy. In addition, Fluidon is also proof of its implementation in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) points set by the United Nations in realizing development for the safety of humans and the planet, especially point number 7 (clean energy and affordable). Hopefully, the development and implementation of this design can become a big source of energy, especially in industrial areas.”

The Smarter World Innovation Challenge T20 competition is a competition organized by T20 and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to support technology development. There are three competition branches: half industry, the energy industry, and the digital economy. In this competition, Rubby and the team took part in the energy industry competition branch, with the focus of competition, namely creating transitional energy sources. The SWIC T20 competition will be held from April to September 2022.
