LSK Gatrik Webinar FTUI: Battery Energy Storage System

Last Friday (22/4), LSK Gatrik FTUI held a webinar entitled Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This theme was presented by resource persons who are experts in this field, namely Dr. Ir. Chairul Hudaya, S.T., M.Eng., IPM (Rector of the University of Technology Sumbawa and Assessor of LSK Gatrik UI).

BESS is a technology developed to store electrical energy using special batteries. BESS will store excess energy generated by the New and Renewable Energy (EBT) system to supply the load when NRE sources cannot produce energy.

Li-ion batteries have been used in a wide variety of energy storage applications, from multi-kilowatt-hour energy-type batteries in residential systems with rooftop photovoltaic arrays to multi-megawatt containerized batteries for the provision of additional grid services.

“BESS has advantages that can be obtained by providers. First, Replacing expensive and emission-intensive diesel-based generators. Second, Increasing the efficiency and profitability of existing generating assets. Third, reducing overall emissions. Fourth, increasing the adoption and profitability of renewable energy. Fifth, create local jobs. Lastly, provide environmental benefits,” said Chairul.

The use of battery storage is so that it can produce high quality electricity at a relatively affordable price. The lower the price of solar and wind generation technology, the combination with batteries will be able to make the price of electricity from the RE generators cheaper than steam power plants (PLTU) in the future.

“The working principle of this battery is that in the battery there is a negative electrode (cathode) that functions as a donor of electrons and a positive electrode (anode) that functions as an electron acceptor. These two basic components are arranged into one and used to store electrical energy in the form of chemical reactions,” said Chairul .

As for the material that is most often used today, Lithium Batteries, this is based on this type of battery being more flexible in terms of a longer lifetime than other types of batteries such as Lead Acid Batteries.
