FTUI Doctoral Promotion: Mohammad Azwar Develops an Optimized μFSSW Tool Geometry to Enhance the Quality of Aluminum Joints

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), has once again conferred a doctoral degree through its open doctoral promotion session. Mohammad Azwar successfully earned his doctoral degree with a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.00 and was awarded the distinction of Cum Laude. With this achievement, he becomes the 134th doctoral graduate of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the 672nd doctoral graduate of FTUI.

During the open doctoral promotion session held on 23 June 2026 at Room 304, GK Building, FTUI, Mohammad Azwar presented his dissertation entitled “Development and Optimization of Micro Friction Stir Spot Welding (μFSSW) Tool Geometry for AA1100 Lap Joints.” His research focused on the development and analysis of the Micro Friction Stir Spot Welding (μFSSW) process to improve the quality of aluminum joints through a combination of experimental investigation and numerical modeling. The study examined the influence of tool geometry and penetration depth on the mechanical strength, macrostructural characteristics, and microhardness distribution of welded joints.

The research findings demonstrated that tool geometry has a significant impact on joint quality. The Tool 2 configuration, with a Real Plunge Depth (RPD) of 330–400 μm and a Total Welding Time (TWT) of 10 seconds, delivered the best overall performance, achieving the highest average maximum load capacity. In addition, the study successfully developed a transient thermal finite element model capable of accurately simulating the welding process, providing deeper insights into heat distribution and joint formation throughout the welding operation.

The research makes an important contribution to the advancement of microscale joining technology, particularly for precision manufacturing applications that require high-quality and efficient aluminum joints.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., commended the significance of the research.

FTUI remains committed to fostering research that contributes meaningfully to technological advancement and strengthens the competitiveness of Indonesia’s manufacturing industry,” said Prof. Kemas.

The doctoral promotion session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Akhmad Herman Yuwono, M.Phil.Eng. The dissertation was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ir. Ario Sunar Baskoro, S.T., M.T., M.Eng. as the principal supervisor, with Prof. Dr. Ir. Gandjar Kiswanto, M.Eng. serving as the co-supervisor. The examination committee consisted of Prof. Dr. Ir. Triyono, S.T., M.T.; Prof. Dr. Ir. Winarto, M.Sc.; Prof. Sugeng Supriadi, S.T., M.S.Eng., Ph.D.; Prof. Dr. Yudan Whulanza, S.T., M.Sc.; and Jos Istiyanto, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.

Through this research, Mohammad Azwar further strengthens FTUI’s contribution to the advancement of innovative manufacturing technologies and materials engineering, supporting industrial development through research with practical and lasting impact.
