Mochamad Chalid, S.Si., M.Sc.Eng. explained that this collaboration embodies the concept of a “miniature sustainable city,” where UI serves as both a model and a living laboratory for developing various sustainability initiatives. This concept enables the application of eco-friendly urban aspects, such as green infrastructure, waste management, and livable housing systems. The sustainable city model is expected to be replicated in different regions of Indonesia, creating more efficient, environmentally friendly, and integrated urban solutions. “Waste management is not a standalone journey but a collective responsibility for all of us. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for generations to come,” said Prof. Chalid.

The installation of 10 plastic bottle dropboxes at FTUI is expected to not only enhance waste management facilities but also foster better habits among students and staff in waste disposal and recycling. These dropboxes will make it easier to collect, separate, and recycle plastic bottles into new products that support the principles of a circular economy, thereby reducing the negative environmental impact of plastic waste.

According to Rachel Nathasia, Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara, this collaborative effort is part of the company’s vision to support integrated waste management in Indonesia. By partnering with educational institutions, PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara aims to strengthen the flow of plastic waste collection in various regions while introducing sustainability concepts to the younger generation. The presence of dropboxes at FTUI is expected to serve as an educational tool and a practical model for students on the importance of recycling, inspiring them to actively contribute to environmental sustainability.

FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, stated, “The launch of the FTUI Bottle Plastic Dropbox is a testament to our commitment to positioning FTUI as a pioneer in sustainable waste management within educational environments. This initiative not only provides facilities to support the principles of a circular economy but also drives a cultural shift in waste management among students and staff. We hope this step inspires other institutions and strengthens FTUI’s role in creating a greener and more sustainable environment.”

Moving forward, CSWM UI plans to conduct various awareness programs on campus as part of its efforts to promote responsible waste management. These initiatives aim to build students’ understanding and proactive attitudes toward plastic waste issues, foster a culture of sustainability in academic environments, and shape students into change agents in society. With the support of PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara, these awareness activities will emphasize introducing the concept of a circular economy through effective waste management methods.

***

Public Communications Office
Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

The Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), through the Center for Sustainability and Waste Management (CSWM) UI in collaboration with PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara, launched the “FTUI Bottle Plastic Dropbox” on Tuesday (19/11) at the Lobby of Building K, FTUI.
