In response, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) collaborated with PT Toyota Astra Motor, PT Astra Honda Motor, PT Astra Infrastruktur, and IDDC to organize a Traffic Safety Program aimed at instilling awareness to minimize driving risks caused by human factors. The program began with a seminar titled “Smart Moves, Live Green: Safe Roads, Sustainable Futures,” held at Auditorium K301, FTUI’s K Building (15/11).

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, emphasized that road safety is a critical issue often underestimated despite its significant impact. He noted that this seminar provided students with an opportunity to learn, share insights, and understand their role in fostering a better driving culture. He also expressed gratitude to the industry partners supporting the Traffic Safety Program.

The seminar bridged the gap between academia and industry, featuring five speakers: Iwan Abdurahman (Manager, PT Toyota Astra Motor), Rouli Sijabat (Sustainability Manager, PT Toyota Astra Motor), Johanes Lucky (Manager, PT Astra Honda Motor), Tunjung Hermawanto (Deputy Head of Operations, Astra Tol Cipali), and Bintarto Agung (CEO, Indonesia Defensive Driving Center).

The speakers enthusiastically shared insights with students on understanding road risks, introducing modern safety technologies like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including cruise control and automatic braking systems, and promoting the benefits of smart driving for reducing carbon emissions. Discussions also covered toll road infrastructure improvements by PT Astra Infrastruktur, such as installing rumble strips and CCTV to reduce accident risks and enhance safety.

The seminar also introduced the Eco-Safety Driving Framework, a system designed to encourage safe and environmentally friendly driving habits. This framework consists of three phases:

Pre-driving: Preparation steps such as route planning, vehicle inspection, and driver readiness.

Driving Mode ON: Focusing on a vigilant mindset (4A), adherence to safety protocols (SECE), and defensive driving techniques.

Post-driving: Post-drive evaluations, including parking and resting activities.

Toyota also invited 40 students to participate in the Eco Safety Driving Champion program, which included direct training on safe driving theory and practice from experts. Five outstanding participants will be selected as Traffic Safety Ambassadors at FTUI, becoming the program’s pioneers at UI. These ambassadors will have the opportunity to test Toyota’s latest vehicles, participate in Toyota programs, and receive internship opportunities with Toyota or its subsidiaries.

In addition to the seminar, the event included the Traffic Safety Program, which allowed participants to experience safe driving through Joyride 4W and Joyride 2W activities. Participants tested Toyota and Honda vehicles, both four-wheelers and two-wheelers, to understand the importance of safety features and proper driving practices.

Through this program, FTUI aims to foster a generation that values road safety and practices eco-safety driving, contributing to building a culture of safe, responsible driving while addressing sustainability issues by reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment for future generations.

***

Public Communications Office
Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia

The rising number of traffic accidents in Indonesia has drawn serious attention from various parties.
