DJKI issued the patent certificates for the period of January to March 2025. The six FTUI lecturers are Prof. Dr.Eng. Drs. Benyamin Kusumo Putro, M.Eng., Prof. Dr. Ir. Donanta Dhaneswara, M.Si., Ir. Rahmat Saptono, M.Sc.Tech., Ph.D., Prof. Yandi Andri Yatmo, S.T., M.Arch., Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Ir. Setijo Bismo, DEA, and Dr. Muhamad Sahlan, S.Si., M.Eng., who secured three patents on his own.

Prof. Benyamin’s patent, titled “Method for Classifying Humans and Animals Based on Artificial Neural Networks and MMWAVE Radar and the Classification Device Thereof”, describes a method of classifying humans and animals—specifically cats and peacocks—for disaster rescue operations and monitoring vital signs at home. Using mmWave radar, the system detects echoes analyzed using feature extraction methods based on bispectrum analysis. The resulting images are then used as a dataset for human-animal classification using convolutional neural networks. With an average classification accuracy of 93% across three categories, this method proves highly effective, especially in reducing misidentification during post-disaster human rescue efforts.

Prof. Donanta stated that his patent, titled “Composition of Oxide Inclusion Cleaning Flux for Aluminum Melting and Its Manufacturing Process,“ bears similarities to international research. However, his work’s advantage lies in the use of more accessible and cost-effective flux components derived from local materials. The flux is made from sodium obtained from table salt, widely available in Indonesia, supporting local salt artisans and contributing to the regional economy.

The patent secured by Ir. Rahmat relates to an invention of equipment and testing methods for sheet metal formability, aimed at simulating specific strain conditions more simply than standard sheet simulation testing commonly used in both industrial and laboratory settings. Titled “Method and Equipment for Testing Sheet Metal to Simulate Equivalent Biaxial Strain Conditions Using Grease or Other Viscous Media”, the invention offers simpler tools at a more affordable cost. This enables manufacturers to conduct regular quality control of raw materials to ensure consistent product quality on a large scale. The patent leaves room for further design improvement, final product manufacturing, and performance testing to prepare it for mass production with the required quality and economic value.

Prof. Yandi was granted a patent for “Miniature Yard as an Experimental Device to Study the Role of Green Space for Environmental Sustainability.”

Dr. Sahlan received three patents, two product patents and one process patent. The product patents, Antifungal Shampoo with Bee Propolis as Active Ingredient and Antifungal Face Soap Made from Propolis Extract, are antifungal products derived from propolis extract. Developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine UI and fungal pathogen experts, these products were tested for their antifungal properties. To support the production of these items, Dr. Sahlan also patented a process titled “Process for Producing Propolis Powder by Spray Drying”. This process results in a powder form of propolis that simplifies dosage formulation for manufacturers. Additionally, the powder form dissolves more easily in water, allowing it to be easily processed into capsules or tablets.

Prof. Bismo began his research related to his patent in June 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak. He developed an air purification device initially used in the Department of Chemical Engineering at FTUI. As the device proved beneficial to many, production expanded to 3,000 units, which were distributed to hospitals across Indonesia. Compared to similar products, this device’s advantages include the use of readily available plasma and a plasma dispersion technique capable of reaching the throat area, where the COVID-19 virus resides in the human body. His invention, titled “Air Purification Device Using Cold Anion Plasma Dispersion via Forced Convection with Tangential Fan Equipped with UVC, Ozone, and Wet Walls for Virus and Pathogen Disinfection”, has now been patented.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his pride in this achievement. “The accomplishments of our FTUI lecturers are a true testament to their dedication and the high quality of research with real-world impact. These innovations make significant contributions to their respective fields and elevate the name of the Faculty of Engineering UI on the national stage,” said Prof. Kemas.

***

Public Communications Office

Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

Six lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) have obtained eight patents from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.
