The event featured Dr. Miller Alonso from the University of Leeds as the keynote speaker, who provided in-depth insights into strategies and opportunities for Indonesian students interested in pursuing doctoral studies in the United Kingdom.

In his presentation, Dr. Alonso emphasized that the most strategic first step in the Ph.D. application process is selecting the right supervisor, rather than immediately choosing a university. The relationship between the student and the supervisor plays a crucial role in the success of the doctoral journey. Therefore, the interview process should be utilized by prospective students to understand the supervisor’s expectations, including any obligations to work full-time in the laboratory. Strong and effective communication with the supervisor from the beginning to the end of the program is a key factor in completing a Ph.D.

Dr. Alonso further explained that the UK Ph.D. system strongly emphasises research independence. Students with excellent undergraduate GPAs may apply directly to Ph.D. programs without needing a master’s degree. He recommended applying to more than one university to increase the chances of acceptance.

Several flexible program options are available. For example, the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDTs) welcomes applicants from various disciplines and allocates around 30% of its quota to international students. Additionally, split-site Ph.D. programs allow students to receive supervision from their home institution and a UK university. Part-time Ph.D. programs are generally only available for students residing in the UK, while opportunities to become a visiting Ph.D. student are also accessible through various international collaborative schemes. Dr. Alonso noted that interdisciplinary research projects with supervisors from diverse academic backgrounds are highly valued.

Regarding funding, prospective students should prepare for monthly living expenses of approximately £1,100. For LPDP scholarship applicants, contacting target universities early in the process is advisable to secure strong support and recommendation letters. Regarding the visa application process, students must prepare a Letter of Acceptance, an ATAS certificate (for specific programs), and proof of sufficient funding.

Dr. Alonso concluded that while Ph.D. admissions in the UK are open year-round, LPDP scholarship applicants must follow a specific timeline—applications open in June, with results announced in September. The academic year typically begins in September/October or February/April. He stressed the importance of contacting prospective supervisors first to receive academic guidance and prepare a solid research proposal before submitting a formal application through the university’s portal.

Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Manager of International Partnerships and Education, also remarked, “The topic was highly relevant and provided strategic insights for our students planning to pursue further studies abroad, especially at the doctoral level. The emphasis on early communication with potential supervisors and understanding the UK Ph.D. system are key points often overlooked by students.”

This guest lecture served as a valuable guide for students aspiring to undertake doctoral studies in the UK. It highlighted the importance of strategic planning, academic preparedness, and effective communication from the early stages of the application process.

***

Public Communications Office

Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, held a guest lecture titled “The Art and Trade of Securing a PhD in the UK“ on Friday (May 2).
