The competition was organized by National Taiwan University in collaboration with the TECO Technology Foundation in Taipei, Taiwan. Out of 230 teams from 11 countries—a total of 1,150 participants—only 20 teams advanced to the final round held on August 19, 2025, with Team POF proudly representing Indonesia as the sole national finalist.

Team POF consists of Vine Novia Pakpahan (Architecture 2021), Syahlaisa Afra Amani (Architecture 2021), Luqman Kamaludin (Architecture 2021), Tabita Essela Pebriana (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering 2021), and Juan Valensi Ridwan Ramadhan (Civil Engineering 2022). Their success was supported by dedicated guidance from faculty advisors Dr. Miktha Farid Alkadri, S.Ars., M.Ars.; Dr.-Ing. Ir. Ova Candra Dewi, S.T., M.Sc. GP., IPU.; Ardiyansyah, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D.; and Dr.Eng. Arnas Lubis, S.T., M.T., who provided continuous direction and encouragement throughout the preparation and competition phases.

In the competition, Team POF presented “The Flux: Sustainable Shearing Layer and Pisé Block Construction Method”, a green building design focused on two sites in France—Chimilin (retrofit) and Villefontaine (new development). By implementing the shearing layer construction system and rammed earth (pisé block) material, The Flux aims to achieve near-zero emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2050. The project’s circularity concept integrates people, nature, and cultural heritage through the use of local materials, traditional techniques, passive design strategies, and water-sensitive landscaping.

The excellence of The Flux was validated through advanced simulation tools such as THERM, Ubakus, ETABS, Ladybug, Honeybee, One Click LCA, and DesignBuilder, ensuring high energy performance, comfort, and carbon control. The project meets international green building standards—LEED, BREEAM, and DGNB—and scored highly in life cycle analysis. With its modular design and design-for-disassembly approach, The Flux offers a sustainable architectural solution that not only reduces carbon footprints but also adapts to the evolving life cycle of buildings.

Team member Vine Novia Pakpahan expressed her pride:

“This experience taught us not only how to design sustainable buildings but also how to collaborate across disciplines and present ideas in a global forum. It feels incredible to represent UI and Indonesia on the international stage.”

FTUI Dean Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., also conveyed his appreciation:

“The achievement of Team POF proves that FTUI students have global competitiveness. They excel not only academically but also demonstrate creativity and innovation relevant to today’s global issues—especially the transition toward net zero. We are immensely proud and hope this success will inspire other students.”

This accomplishment strengthens FTUI’s position as a leading center for sustainable engineering and architectural education in Southeast Asia, showcasing the tangible contribution of Indonesian students in advancing low-carbon technology on a global scale.

Team POF’s participation was fully supported by FTUI through its international competition development program, faculty mentorship, and funding assistance, enabling students to focus on developing high-impact, competitive research and innovations.

The success of Team POF reaffirms FTUI’s commitment to empowering students to compete internationally while contributing meaningfully to the advancement of sustainable technology.

***

Public Communication Office

Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia

Five students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), united under Team POF, successfully won the Excellence Award at the prestigious Net Zero Tech International Contest 2025.
