The laboratory was inaugurated by the Dean of FT UI, Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, and attended by donors and faculty leaders on Monday (11/10).

The IDE Capstone Design Lab is a collaborative space designed to support capstone design activities—an essential series of interdisciplinary engineering projects forming a key component of the ABET/Washington Accord curriculum. This facility enables students from various study programs to design and test engineering solutions directly using project-based and interdisciplinary approaches.

The lab is equipped with modern work areas such as a PC workstation area, electronics area, and a classroom/workshop space accommodating up to 40 students, as well as a brainstorming area that supports ideation and innovation. Additional flagship facilities include the Bambulab X1 Carbon 3D Printer—featuring multi-filament capability and lidar sensors for high accuracy—and a fiber laser welding system, a state-of-the-art tool for medium-duty fabrication.

For FT UI students, the IDE Capstone Design Lab represents a significant step toward creating a more contextual and hands-on learning experience. Through this facility, students can collaborate across disciplines to develop real-world solutions to engineering and societal challenges while enhancing their critical thinking, project management, and design innovation skills. The laboratory is also expected to serve as an incubator for creative ideas with the potential to evolve into advanced technological innovations or superior engineering products.

The inauguration also served as a moment for FT UI to express gratitude to its endowment donors and faculty partners. A major contribution came from Ir. Iskandar Muda Kamil and Renita Marisa Zahar, who donated IDR 1.4 billion for the establishment of the IDE Capstone Design Lab. The donation was made in honor and memory of their late son, Reisyah Agam Kamil, a Civil Engineering FT UI alumnus from the Class of 2010.

Previously, on 19 December 2024, Iskandar and Renita had also contributed to the construction of the Reisyah Agam Kamil Student Commons EngSpace, a space dedicated to inspiration, collaboration, and community for the FT UI academic community.

“We want to continue the spirit of the late Reisyah, who always had a passion for engineering and collaboration. Through this laboratory, we hope FT UI students can continue to create, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to society. We believe that supporting engineering education is an investment in the nation’s future,” said Iskandar Muda.

In addition to the IDE Capstone Design Lab, FT UI also inaugurated a new elevator at the Salemba Lecture Hall Building and the Smart Classroom S501, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance comfort and the overall quality of the learning environment.

“We are deeply grateful to the donors and partners who have supported FT UI’s advancement. The Capstone Design Lab and other new facilities mark important milestones in strengthening project-based learning, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration—hallmarks of future engineering education,” said FT UI Dean Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan.

With the inauguration of the laboratory, FT UI reinforces its commitment to further integrating education, research, and innovation while expanding the role of alumni and industry partners in building an excellent and future-ready engineering learning ecosystem.

***

Public Communications Office

Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FT UI), has officially inaugurated the Interdisciplinary Engineering (IDE) Capstone Design Laboratory, a new learning facility located on the mezzanine floor of the IDE Building at the FT UI Depok Campus.
