The Career Development Center (CDC) of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), held a coordination meeting with PT Gaya Makmur Mobil (GMM), a company engaged in the sales of commercial trucks, spare parts, and vehicle maintenance and repair services, on Wednesday (July 29) at the Faculty Council Room (DGB), FTUI. The meeting, held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., focused on exploring opportunities for collaboration in student internship programs, research initiatives, and broader human resource (HR) development within the automotive sector.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, GMM explained that its core business operations consist of two main areas: the sales of commercial trucks and spare parts, and workshop services covering vehicle maintenance and repair carried out by professional mechanics. Most of GMM’s truck units are currently imported as completely built-up (CBU) vehicles from China. However, the company has begun developing a local assembly operation for light trucks on a limited scale. Technical product improvements developed in Indonesia are also communicated to the company’s principal in China as feedback for future product design enhancements. GMM further highlighted the emerging challenges associated with the development of electric trucks, noting that meeting zero-emission standards requires significantly higher performance and technical standards than conventional fossil-fuel-powered trucks. Given these challenges, GMM emphasized the need for stronger collaboration with higher education institutions to support continuous innovation and business development.<\/p>\n
In terms of human resource development, GMM has established its own Training Center and operates the GM Mobil School program, which has actively collaborated with vocational high schools (SMKs). To date, the company has partnered with 11 vocational schools through industry-class programs and hybrid knowledge-transfer initiatives. As the automotive business continues to grow, GMM expects a substantial increase in workforce demand and therefore considers collaboration with universities essential to preparing future industry professionals. Such collaboration may take the form of joint research involving lecturers and students, as well as internship programs. GMM also expressed its readiness to accommodate up to 30 student interns.<\/p>\n
Specifically regarding collaboration with the CDC, GMM proposed prioritizing internship opportunities for final-year students, whose academic workload is generally lighter during their eighth semester. The company will communicate detailed requirements and selection criteria at a later stage. In addition, GMM plans to recruit 20 prospective participants for its GM Mobil Center Batch 8 program, a professional training initiative designed to prepare future sales consultants. Information regarding the program will be disseminated through promotional flyers, with implementation scheduled for October or November this year. GMM also expressed its willingness to serve as a guest speaker during an event to be held on September 3\u20134 at the company\u2019s premises.<\/p>\n
The meeting also identified several concrete opportunities for technical collaboration. One notable initiative is the development of a driving simulator requested by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation. While GMM already possesses a commercial truck unit that can be utilized for the project, the company requires technical expertise to develop the simulator technology, creating a potential collaboration opportunity with FTUI’s Department of Electrical Engineering. Furthermore, GMM expressed interest in contributing industry practitioners as guest lecturers and exploring further cooperation with the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering through formal cooperation agreements. CDC FTUI reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating these initiatives through internship programs, professional training, and recruitment activities. Together, FTUI and GMM aim to promptly follow up on these collaboration opportunities, creating greater opportunities for Universitas Indonesia students while contributing to the development of highly competent engineering professionals for Indonesia’s automotive industry.<\/p>\n
