Abstract
In the immediate post-independence period in Indonesia, as with the heady economic decade preceding the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s, Jakarta experienced rapid urbanization. Immediately following the 1998 crash, it was evident that Jakarta’s rapid urbanization and seemingly positive economic growth was wholly based on speculation and, as in the 1950s and 1960s, the city still lacked the capacity to effectively accommodate its growth. Again, Jakarta is in the midst of a phase of rapid growth, but within a different political context and based upon a new paradigm that acknowledges the critical importance of supporting urban development with serious, and long overdue, infrastructure investments. New transit systems, expansion and upgrading of the current systems, investments in water management to expand services and mitigate flooding, a robust housing construction program aimed at all sectors of society through public and private initiatives, and political leadership that seems to value outputs (and not just expectations) all point to a potentially different outcome from this current round of rapid urbanization In Jakarta.
