DTK FTUI Exhibits 36 Products Designed by Chemical Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering Students

Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (DTK FTUI) held a Product Exhibition designed by students of the Chemical Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering study program which took place in the Lobby of Building K, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (07/06/2022). This exhibition is a form of final semester examination of the Product Design course that must be taken by students in Semester VI of lectures. This activity aims to provide a real experience for students to introduce product prototypes that they have designed. 36 products designed by students from the two study programs were displayed at this exhibition.

This exhibition was opened by the Head of the Department, Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, ST, MT. The exhibition was initiated by a Product Design Lecturer Team consisting of Prof. Misri Gozan, Dr. Dewi Tristantini, Dr. Yuswan Muharam, Dr. Rahma Muthia, and Dr. Ibnu Maulana H. In addition to the supporting lecturers, the exhibition of student-designed products was also attended by guest lecturers from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turgay Pekdemi, who has experience as an industrial practitioner in several countries such as England, Japan, and Switzerland. Not only that, several practitioners with industrial backgrounds in chemical and biochemical products (most of whom are alumni of DTK UI) were also invited to this activity and acted as examiners.

“During the Product Design course, students are forged to be able to use the knowledge gained from several previous courses to be applied to the design of chemical and biological products coherently. Before this exhibition was held, each group had passed a series of assignments related to the stages of designing a product which included searching for Needs, Ideas, Selection and Manufacture, Supply Chain, HSE, and Economic Feasibility. In addition, students are also encouraged to communicate well and work together in a team to solve problems related to a product to be made,” said Dr. Bambang Heru.

The exhibition was very lively. Visitors and examiners seemed enthusiastic to find out more about the product prototypes displayed at the exhibition stands they visited. At the end of the exhibition, all examiners collect and discuss the results of product evaluations from each group together with the supporting lecturer.

“We, the team of lecturers from Product Design Courses, and also the guest examiners are satisfied and proud of the learning achievements (CPL) of each group that appear and give praise to several groups that have exceeded the expectations of the examiners. Criticisms and suggestions from examiners have been accepted and become a special note for our team for improvement in the coming year, “said Prof. Misri Gozan.

This activity is expected to be able to encourage students to apply the product design knowledge they have received for one semester in the industry. In addition, students are expected to be stimulated to carry out technology-based entrepreneurial activities (technopreneurship) according to the knowledge they receive in product design courses.
