FTUI Doctorate Utilizes Digital Technology to Design Green Buildings and Healthy Buildings

So far, buildings have consumed 40% of global energy over the past ten years. This is caused by several factors such as increasing population growth, increasing demand for building functions, and the quality of indoor buildings, as well as global climate change. In addition, the construction and building industry is also stated to harm the environment related to the consumption of natural resources.

In dealing with this issue, one solution is to apply the concept of green building, which is a building concept that emphasizes the preservation of natural resources and is friendly to the environment.

On the other hand, humans can spend 90% of their time indoors. This fact gives the urgency of the need to maintain the quality of conditions inside the building such as air and humidity inside. Moreover, there are still many building materials that use chemicals in the process. So as long as humans spend a lot of their daily activities inside buildings, it is very possible that the body also absorbs various substances found in building construction materials.

Therefore, it is important to develop a healthy building concept that focuses on the comfort and quality of life of building users, which ultimately affects the performance and productivity of building occupants.

In general, the integration between design and building performance analysis processes as well as user comfort is not carried out at the initial stage but at the detailed planning stage. Meanwhile, the importance of making decisions related to aspects of environmental sustainability and human health in building planning is carried out in the early stages of planning.

However, the various performances covered in the concepts of green building and healthy building tend to require an extensive planning process, so the required planning time is longer than that of conventional building planning.

Evaluating the ongoing aspects of making a design, which usually involves decision-making based on experience in performance-oriented building planning processes, can be replaced by using computational simulation tools that provide recommendations in less time during the design process.

The issue of developing this computational simulation tool is discussed by Mustika Sari in her dissertation of the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), entitled “Development of Green Building and Healthy Building Performance Prediction Systems Based on Machine Learning and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to Increase Efficiency” Planning Time”. This dissertation was presented at the FTUI Doctoral Promotion Session which was held last month at the UI Campus, Depok.

In his research, Mustika Sari developed a prediction system based on a data-based machine learning approach integrated with Machine Learning and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to predict the performance of Green Buildings and Healthy Buildings called building performance prediction with Building Information Modeling and Machine Learning-based System (BIMLY).

“With the prediction system developed in this study, a building planning time efficiency of 20% can be obtained through minimizing the process of analyzing the performance of the building to realize the concept of green building and healthy building.” Said Mustika Sari

“From the research results of Dr. Mustika Sari, you can see how important the evolution is from conventional buildings to green buildings, smart buildings and now they have to become healthy buildings. Producing a healthy building design development plan through the use of digital technology. In the future, this research will not only produce scientific publications for science, but I also hope that it will be useful for many parties who need it,” said the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU regarding this research.

Mustika Sari earned her doctorate with a perfect GPA of 3.91 and a Cum Laude predicate. He is the 64th Doctor who graduated from the Civil Engineering Department and the 489th Doctorate at FTUI. The Doctoral Promotion Session was chaired by the Chairman of the Session, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU, with Promoter Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi, M.Eng.Sc., and Co-Promoter, Prof. Dr. Ir. Teuku Yuri M. Zagloel, M.Eng.Sc. The Examiner Team consisted of Ayomi Dita Rarasati, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Ir. Yusuf Latief, M.T., Ir. R. Jachrizal Sumabrata, M.Sc (Eng)., Ph.D., Dr.Ir.
