FTUI Strengthens Cooperation for the Development of the 5GT Fishing Boat Project

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) through the Marine Engineering Study Program, entered into cooperation agreements with several partners, such as the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkomarves RI), PT ABC, and PT Radiant Utama Interinsco. This cooperation agreement was carried out to develop a project named Ship Fish 5GT.

“Each partner who collaborates has its focus points, for the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to assist in synergizing between UI and ABC and other parties for the future, PT ABC helps procure some batteries, and Mr. Sofwan Farisyi as a platinum sponsor,” explained Dr. Eng. Muhammad Arif Budiyanto, S.T., M.T., Head of the FTUI Marine Engineering Study Program.

The 5GT Fishing Boat is a pilot project for the electrification of a 5GT fishing boat made of steel. This prototype is the result of a 2021 Higher Education Excellence Applied Research grant (PTUPT) and a 2022 P5 research grant. This project aims to modernize the capture fishing fleet. In addition, the 5GT Fishing Boat construction project will last for three months, starting from November 2022 to January 2023.

Dr. Muhammad Arif Budiyanto explained, “This 5GT Fishing Boat modernization project is motivated by the increasingly limited availability of quality wood as raw material for traditional boats and also the price of fuel oil which continues to rise which causes fishermen’s operational costs to increase. Therefore, the idea of making a 5GT Fish Vessel was born.”

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, M, Eng., IPU welcomed the collaboration process involving FTUI by collaborating with related partners. “The best hope for the ongoing process of making the 5GT Fish Boat, which was the idea of an FTUI Lecturer, later with the components used such as steel materials and electric propulsion hopefully can create a stronger and safer construction and can save fuel costs and be environmentally friendly.”
