FTUI Students Win Two Awards at the National Quality Engineering Competition

The SQEos Team and the Bikun Team from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), won first and second place in the 8th National Quality Engineering Competition (KRKTN) organized by the Quality Engineering Laboratory, Industrial Engineering, Trisakti University. The two teams won against 21 other teams from 15 universities in Indonesia.
In the competition, participants were asked to answer the question of PT XYZ which engaged in the diesel engine industry and has a remanufacturing division. PT XYZ strives to create sustainable manufacturing or return damaged or consumable components from consumers into new components, so that they are beneficial to the environment and have lower costs.

Using a statistical approach, the SQEos Team consisting of Andreas Parasian, Aldi, and Fariz Muhammad Fajar, formulated a strategy for optimizing the remanufacturing process in order to benefit the company and its customers in a presentation entitled “Strategies for Optimizing the Remanufacturing Process at PT XYZ with a Statistical Approach”.

This team uses data mining to explore the information contained in the data set, Strip Down Report (SDR) or machine quality data, SMR (Service Meter Reading) or the age of the machine to be remanufactured, and the factors that influence these two things. The team also applies data mining procedures and statistical process control to find patterns, relationships, and other information in the data. The analysis results obtained form the basis for making problem solving strategies at each stage.

As a result, the team found that the remanufacturing cost of the European engine was quite cheap, despite the age of the engine. This indicates a maintenance or extended life program in Europe. “Based on this data, the strategy we recommend for PT XYZ is for the company to make maintenance or extended life programs in other areas so that these areas are able to do the same thing. So, in the future, the quality of used goods that are used as remanufacturing materials for PT XYZ will be maintained and the remanufacturing costs will not be expensive,” said Andreas, head of the SQEos team regarding the suggested strategy.

In the same competition, the Bikun Team consisting of Atariki Naufal, Nesia Dwiasta, and Yasmin Eka Putri won second place with the strategy of “Sustainable Manufacturing at PT XYZ.” The Bikun team analyzed the difference in mean SMR in several SDR categories and the relationship between SDR categories and regions using the Welch’s Test method.

“We are also looking for damage relationships between sections with the SDR category by using data mining techniques, namely Multinomial Logistic Regression and Apriori Association. From the results of our analysis, we suggest PT XYZ to focus on the quality of several parts through programs that focus on sustainable manufacturing in several regions that have the most SDR categories, namely the Philippines and Europe. For the purpose of the analysis, based on this analysis, we can create a strategy to save on PT XYZ’s remanufacturing process,” said Atariki Naufal, the leader of the Bikun team, at the event which was held on November 10, 2021 – February 2, 2022.

For the achievements of these students, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU said, “FTUI always supports our students to compete both at home and abroad. These competitions will hone and spur the spirit of innovation for students, so that they can produce solutions to problems faced by the community,” he said.
