Guest Lecture “Material Engineering and Science Update: Medical Device Application”, a collaboration between ASBE UI and RSAB Harapan Kita

On Saturday, March 19, 2022, the Association of Biomedical Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (ASBE UI) and the Harapan Kita Children’s and Mother’s Hospital (RSAB) held a collaboration in the form of a Guest Lecture with the title “Material Engineering and Science Update: Medical Device Application”. The event started at 8.00 WIB with a welcome note by Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng. as the Head of the UI Biomedical Engineering Study Program then the discussion was led by Azizah Intan Pangesty, S.Si., M.Eng., D.Eng. as a moderator in this event.

The first speaker in the guest lecture was Prof. Hendra Hermawan, Ph.D from Laval University, Canada. The material presented was entitled “Introduction to Materials for Medical Applications”. Followed by the second speaker, namely Prof. Sugeng Supriadi, ST, MSEng., Ph.D from the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering, Universitas Indonesia who delivered the material with the title “Biomaterials for Medical Applications in Indonesia.” After the presentation of the material followed by a discussion with the panelists, Dr. Yudan Whulanza, ST, M.Sc.. The event was followed by a question and answer session with various participants from Biomedical Engineering students, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering students, lecturers, health workers, and audiences who have an interest in the use of materials for medical devices.

As explained by the two speakers, the use and development of materials as raw materials for the manufacture of medical devices in Indonesia has progressed far. The choice of material must be adjusted according to the human body’s power and the function of the human body. The use of titanium for the use of medical devices such as implants and prosthetics is considered a suitable material in human bone replacement. This is due to its high resistance to corrosion in the body and is biocompatible with the human body. Furthermore, in terms of structural strength, titanium has a high specific strength and a low Young’s modulus so that it can be used as dental implants for elderly patients.

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU said, “This Guest Lecture is expected to increase the knowledge of students from various majors on the competence of materials in their use of medical devices in Indonesia. It is hoped that with this understanding, students are able to gain knowledge and insight from experts so that students can conduct research and publish related discussion topics.”
