ProfCast FTUI Episode 8: Asphalt Recycling

ProfCast FTUI episode 8 presents a special guest. This episode presents Professors from the Department of Civil Engineering FTUI, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Sigit Pranowo Hadiwardoyo, DEA. In this ProfCast Prof. Sigit discussed Asphalt Recycling, within the scope of the area related to road pavement, which is usually done by using two materials aggregate and asphalt. Both of these components can be recycled and save the use of natural resources.

In his presentation, Prof. Sigit explained, “When a road has been used for decades, there is a process of asphalt aging. Then the aging asphalt, rock, and aggregate are rejuvenated. The rejuvenation process is through investigation and research. In addition, this recycling process will go through a sorting process first. first for the rejuvenation process. This Asphalt Recycling process has existed in Indonesia for a long time, but maybe it’s not being practiced enough. Asphalt Recycling can save Natural Resources.”

The use of asphalt usually uses oil-type asphalt. In the use of asphalt, Indonesia imports from outside. Indonesia is one of the countries that has asphalt, namely stone asphalt. This type of asphalt is found on Buton Island, called Asbuton.

Apart from oil and stone asphalt, there is also plastic asphalt. Plastic asphalt is asphalt that comes from plastic components, then the asphalt mixture is added. This asphalt is used as a step to utilize plastic waste, but of course, it won’t be harmful. However, this plastic asphalt still needs to be researched.

“Talking about the type of asphalt used in Indonesia is a challenge for experts right now. Because in Indonesia the temperature is quite high so the problem is that asphalt will melt if the temperature is high and the technology being developed must also add temperature and pressure due to asphalt pavement,” said Prof. . Sigit.

Met on a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU said, “ProfCast is one of the FTUI programs to convey information to the Indonesian public regarding innovation and expertise of FTUI Professors and lecturers. In this episode, it is hoped that the public can gain more knowledge regarding asphalt recycling, challenges to Indonesian asphalt technology, and various innovations that have been made by Prof. Sigit.”
