To Increase Awareness of Mental Health Issues, FTUI Holds Counselor Training for Lecturers

The Student Affairs, Research and Community Service Unit, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) in collaboration with the Student Advocacy and Welfare Division of the FTUI Student Executive Body (Adkesma BEM) held counselling training for lecturers within FTUI. The training took place in the Academic Senate Room, 2nd Floor of the Dean’s Building. FTUI, on Friday (12/05). The training was attended by the FTUI Student Affairs, Research and Community Service Managers, several FTUI Lecturers, and FTUI BEM Adkesma administrators.

“This training is carried out as a means for lecturers in the FTUI environment to improve their competence related to the world of counselling. This is because the presence of lecturers not only transfers knowledge but can also become counsellors for students. Later, it is hoped that the lecturers will be able to have soft skills in dealing with problems or be able to overcome the emotions of students who have problems, especially related to the campus world,” said Dr.rer.pol. Romadhani Ardi, S.T., M.T.

Material regarding the role of lecturers as counsellors for students was explained by the Facilitator from the UI Faculty of Psychology, Dra. Sugiarti A. Musabiq, M. Kes., Psychologist., “Research states that being a student is a phase with a high level of stress, as well as being a student at the Faculty of Engineering. Stereotypes that engineering students must be strong, a pile of tasks, busy organizations, committees, or even internships are several factors that can trigger high stress, namely demotivation. For this reason, as parents of both students on campus, lecturers can become counsellors in establishing good relations by helping to provide suggestions for solutions when students are in a phase with high levels of stress, especially that interferes with academic activities.” clear.

He added that lecturers can be a bridge in increasing the level of student awareness of “mental health”. It means that students can have the awareness to have a healthy feeling of mind and have a positive attitude towards themselves and others. Especially those that don’t cause problems in academic terms.

After the presentation of the material, the activity continued with a discussion session answering several case studies regarding problems that often occur among students, especially those related to the problem of completing the Final Project (TA). Several lecturers actively answered the case study by providing critical answers.

“It is hoped that this training will provide new perspectives and understanding for lecturers at FTUI in becoming counsellors for students. The role of lecturers as counsellors is important because lecturers can become a student control system when experiencing stress which results in academic problems on campus,” said the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU.
