UI Students Won the Best Paper at the International Youth Summit of Renewable Energy

Two Universitas Indonesia students from the Faculty of Engineering (FT) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA) won the Best Paper predicate at the International Youth Summit of Renewable Energy (IYSRE). At the international conference, Alifya A. Khairany (FTUI 2018), Fikui Siami (FMIPA UI 2017), collaborated with a student from the Ten November Institute of Technology, Yohannes Maruli (ITS 2020).

The three students compiled a scientific article entitled “Market and Financial Scheme Analysis of Photovoltaic Solar House System Based in Payback Period from Existing Business Models in Jakarta, Indonesia”. Alifya and the team tried to take advantage of the huge potential that Indonesia has in the field of solar energy. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia even set a target for installing solar power to reach 6.4 GWp by 2025 as a form of attention and support for the utilization of this potential.

“We compiled this research with the aim of providing an overview for the community regarding the installation of a solar system at home, as well as the benefits that the community will get, both from a financial and business perspective. This can help increase the use of solar energy when people first know the benefits they will get after installing the system,” said Fikui regarding their research background.

“We analyzed the Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) and Payback Period in this paper. Calculations are carried out by searching for data, calculating electrical loads and daily Photovoltaic (PV) production, to making excel models for financial schemes. We also held discussions and interviews with three people with Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) backgrounds as well as Solar Panel developers in Indonesia,” said Alifya.

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the UI students. “Collaboration must be built from an early age. Facing increasingly complex world problems, it is necessary to collaborate across fields of science and also across institutions to produce superior solutions and innovations and have a positive impact on society. Hopefully in the future these students will be able to develop their research.”

Various preparations and research were carried out during the period June-August 2021. The presentation of papers was carried out on August 27, 2021. They presented their research results at Symposiums 1 and 2 with the theme “Renewable Energy Shifting Strategies Through Policy, Social Awareness and Economic Model” and “Green Urban System and City Development.” Thanks to in-depth research on the topic of installing a solar system at home, Alifya and his team have been awarded the Best Paper title.
