On Wednesday (24/1), the launch event of the book “Herr Soeryantono 101 Photos” took place in the Smart Meeting Room of the Dean’s Office at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI). The event was attended by his wife, Mrs. Kristin, the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Ayomi Dita Rarasati, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., and fellow FTUI faculty members.
“There are two topics that were most comfortable to discuss with Prof. Herr, namely music and photography. He was a music enthusiast and a photography lover. In his storage disks, there are numerous photographic works of his,” said Ir. Alan Marino, M.Sc., opening the event.
Prof. Ir. Mahmud Sudibandriyo, M.Sc., Ph.D., Deputy Dean for Resources, Venture, and General Administration, expressed in his speech, “What I also remember about Mr. Herr is his photography. So when he went out of town or climbed a mountain, when he returned, I asked for his souvenirs, which were to see his photos. Proudly, he showed them.”
“I want to express my gratitude to Mr. and Mrs., friends of the late Mr. Herr, who are present at this event. This event is held to commemorate the late Prof. Herr Soeryantono, who was also born on January 24. Thanks also to the entire team who created this book,” said Mrs. Kristin, Prof. Herr’s wife.
Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, also conveyed his appreciation for the book “101 Photos,” stating, “Through this book, we can continue to celebrate and honor his invaluable visual legacy. Mr. Herr Soeryantono not only taught with words but also with images that reflected his views on life and beauty. Through his work, we will be taken on a journey across time and place, attending meaningful events and understanding the stories behind each picture.”
The book “101 Photos” was born from Mrs. Kristin’s desire to compile her husband’s photographic works. The book was curated by some of Prof. Herr’s colleagues, including Raldi Artono Koestoer, Edwin Sasongko, and the late Edi Barnas. They were chosen because, in addition to knowing Prof. Herr, they also shared a passion for photography. In the curation process, Mrs. Kristin selected 200 photos, which were then further narrowed down to 101 photos by the curators. This number was chosen to reflect the essence of photography. The narrative in the book was written by M. Gunawan Alif, a colleague of Prof. Herr at Kamuka Parwata (KAPA) FTUI.
