Universitas Indonesia (UI) Department of Chemical Engineering (DTK) Doctoral Program student Darmawan Ahmad Mukharror won the Best Presenter award at the Loss Prevention Asia 2023 (LPA 2023) International Conference in Malaysia. The conference was held by the Center for Advanced Process Safety (CAPS) Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) Malaysia, together with PETRONAS Technical Delivery Excellence, and took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center on August 21-22, 2023.
At the conference, Darmawan presented a paper entitled “Analysis of Hydrocarbon Gas Buried Onshore Pipeline Accidents in Indonesia as the Databases for Failure Frequency Evaluation in a Quantitative Risk Assessment.” He presented the results of research that had been conducted together with a professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering who currently serves as Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU.
“Winning the best presenter title is an honour, not only because I represent UI, but also because I represent Indonesia as a whole. Of the 35 presenters in the Process Safety category, only 7-8 people came from Indonesia, while the rest came from various other countries. I hope that this achievement as the best presenter can be a motivation for young UI researchers to continue to contribute to the development of science, at least by participating in seminars or other international scientific conferences,” Darmawan said.
The paper presented by Darmawan is a small part of his dissertation in the FTUI Doctoral Program. However, it is important to note that this paper is one of the first scientific endeavours that includes data collection and data analysis related to pipeline accidents in Indonesia. His research is important because, in quantitative risk analysis for oil and gas pipelines, the data used so far comes from abroad, which results in a degree of uncertainty in the risk analysis results when used in Indonesia. Darmawan’s paper is a bridge that reduces uncertainty in quantitative risk analysis for pipelines.
Prof. Heri Hermansyah, Darmawan’s research supervisor, emphasized that the quantitative risk analysis research for pipelines produced by these students reflects not only high academic quality but also dedication to undergoing a serious and comprehensive research process.
“We sent three postgraduate students from FTUI to this conference to present the research results directly to industry experts from various countries. The presentation of research results by FTUI students is a valuable contribution to the relevant disciplines. In the future, their research will also be published in the international journal Process Safety Progress. Hopefully, this achievement will encourage other FTUI students to innovate and excel, both at the national and international levels,” said Prof. Heri.
LPA 2023 is a forum that brings together experts, academics and industry practitioners to share experiences and the latest methods in managing human factors and human performance to improve safety and risk management. With the theme “Improving Human Performance Towards Loss Prevention,” LPA 2023 addresses several specific themes such as Human Factors and safety Culture, Risk Management and emergency Response, Digitalization & Data Analytics, Safety in Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG), Reliability Integrity, Process Safety, Occupational Safety & Health.
