Prof. Andrew Flynn, Professor of Environmental Policy and Planning at Cardiff University, United Kingdom, gave a public lecture at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), on Tuesday (3/10). The public lecture, organized by the Master of Urban and Regional Planning, was delivered at Smart Meeting Room Makara 04, 1st Floor Dean’s Building FTUI with the theme “Climate Change Adaptation: Responses and Challenges in Wales”.
The public lecture was hosted by the Moderator, Dr-Ing. Ova Candra Dewi, Chairperson of the Interdisciplinary Master Program in Urban and Regional Planning. This public lecture activity was attended by lecturers and students, especially the FTUI Master Program in Urban and Regional Planning.
In his public lecture, Prof. Andrew began his presentation with the urgency of adaptation to climate change. Climate change is currently at a high level of air pollution so it can make air quality increasingly unhealthy. Efforts for environmental management must be improved to avoid worse impacts.
“Adaptation to climate change that is promoted in the UK can be an example through mitigation programs, by promoting zero net strategies, such as renewable energy. In addition, mitigation efforts or reducing the greenhouse gas effect can be done by saving energy, not being consumptive, managing waste and efficient use of transportation,” explained Prof. Andrew.
Mitigation and adaptation are concerns in dealing with climate change issues. Mitigation can be done by managing waste and waste, especially by reducing methane gas emissions. As well as energy-efficient building and environmental management. Adaptation by activating water-saving movements and handling drainage systems that can anticipate the impacts of climate change.
This public lecture was responded to enthusiastically by the participants. The participants contributed by asking questions and exchanging insights and thoughts with Prof. Andrew about climate change.
Met on a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Heri said “Climate change is indeed a major problem today, what the UK is doing can be an example in efforts to anticipate climate change. Slum management, wastewater management, drainage and handling of waste services, and energy efficiency are the best forms or ways to adapt and mitigate climate change.”
