Dr. lr. Muhammad Salman, S.T., M.I.T., a lecturer in the Computer Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Indonesia (UI) who is also the Co-Founder and Chairman of Indonesia Cyber Awareness and Resilience Center (IdCARE) UI, received an award at the International Conference – ASEAN JAPAN Cybersecurity Community (IC-AJCC) 2023. This award was received thanks to his active contribution to building ASEAN-Japan community cooperation in the field of cybersecurity.

The award was announced by the Director General of the National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity (NISC), Suzuki Atsuo, on 5-6 October 2023 in Tokyo, Japan. IC-AJCC is a collaborative platform organised by the Japanese Government. The organisation of IC-AJCC this time is a very special momentum because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN-Japan Partnership.

“I highly appreciate and thank the Japanese government for its continuity and commitment to supporting the ASEAN cybersecurity community in strengthening partnerships in the areas of cybersecurity capacity building, knowledge sharing, and other collaborative initiatives. I hope we can continue to work together to create a safe, clean, and reliable cyberspace under the ASEAN-Japan cooperation platform,” Dr Salman said.

The process of determining the award recipients was conducted by a joint committee involving the Japanese government and representatives from ASEAN. Candidates were selected based on their track record of contribution to the cybersecurity community in their respective countries, as well as their contribution to ASEAN-Japan cooperation in the field of cybersecurity. Of the dozens of candidates who made it to the final stage, only four people from four countries (Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, and Japan) were selected as awardees, including Dr Salman who represented Indonesia.

Dr Salman’s active role in building ASEAN-Japan cooperation in cybersecurity has spanned more than 10 years. This journey began when Dr. Salman served as Vice Chairman of the Indonesia Security Incident Response Team on Internet Infrastructure/Coordination Centre (Id-SIRTII/CC) from 2011 to 2018.

Since 2019, Dr Salman has been working with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to develop the capacity of human resources professionals in the field of cybersecurity with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ir. Kalamullah Ramli, M.Eng., Professor of FT UI, was also present as one of the speakers at the IC-AJCC 2023 conference.

Dean of FT UI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, appreciated Dr Salman’s dedication which has added to the list of achievements of FT UI lecturers at the international level. “Through a collaborative project with JICA, Dr Salman has played an active role in improving cybersecurity capacity in Indonesia and across ASEAN, including several other countries that are just beginning to grow their cybersecurity capacity such as Timor Leste, Bhutan, and Mongolia. Currently, under the auspices of IdCARE, a new unit under the Department of Electrical Engineering, FT UI, Dr Salman and several colleagues from the Computer Engineering Department continue to develop various activities and initiatives in the field of cybersecurity,” Prof Heri said.
