Faculty of Engineering UI Maintains First Ranking of Best Engineering Campus in Indonesia Based on THE WUR 2024

The Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) has once again maintained its proud achievement as the Best Engineering Campus in Indonesia. Based on the assessment conducted by the world university ranking agency Times Higher Education (THE), FTUI again occupies the first position in Indonesia as the best university in Indonesia in the field of Engineering. This ranking was recently released by THE World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2024 by Subject (26/10/2022).

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 rankings for Engineering are general engineering, civil engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and chemical engineering. In these fields of science, this year THE assessed 1374 universities, more than last year’s 1306.

FTUI excelled in Indonesia with an overall score of 28.5-34.5, up from last year’s 26.3-31.9, and remains ranked 601-800 in the world. When compared to other universities in Indonesia, FTUI excelled in 3 of the 5 assessment indicators, International Outlook with a score of 56.3, Research Environment with a score of 17.3, and Teaching with a score of 28.3.

The assessment on the Engineering subject utilises the same range of 18 performance indicators used in the overall THE WUR 2024 ranking, unified with scores provided in five categories. However, the overall methodology was carefully recalibrated for each subject, with weights altered to suit each field.

18 indicators were used to measure performance in the five categories of research quality, industry, international outlook, research environment, and teaching. The 18 performance indicators are carefully calibrated to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparison, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and government.

Of the 18 performance indicators, THE categorised them into five areas, namely teaching or learning environment (28%), research environment which includes number, income and reputation (29%), research quality which describes the recognition, influence and success of research results (27.5%), the international outlook of teaching staff, students and research (7.5%), and industry derived from income and patents (8%).

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST, M.Eng, IPU expressed his pride for this achievement, “The success of FTUI in maintaining the title of Best Engineering Campus in Indonesia based on the results of THE WUR 2024 ranking, is the result of the hard work of the entire FTUI academic community, especially the lecturers.”

Prof Heri also said that so far FTUI has implemented three main strategies. These are the modernisation and internationalisation of engineering education, research and innovation that have a broad impact, and the cultivation of the spirit of entrepreneurship in carrying out the tridarma of higher education. “Gradually, we are aiming to improve the quality of engineering education in line with the world’s leading universities.”

Dean Heri added that with the achievement of being Indonesia’s best engineering faculty for two consecutive years, UI engineering faculty graduates can now compete in the international workforce. “This will certainly have an impact on the aspect of mastering global technology which will ultimately bring progress to our beloved country Indonesia,” he explained when asked about FTUI’s future expectations.

Currently, FTUI has 8,395 students from S1 to S3 levels. FTUI is supported by 262 lecturers and more than 84% of the lecturers have doctoral degrees from various universities abroad. The number of FTUI professors, 89, is the highest compared to other faculties at UI. FTUI has 13 undergraduate study programmes, 2 professional programmes, 9 master’s study programmes, and 7 doctoral study programmes that have been accredited with excellence by the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education and LAM TEKNIK at the national level as well as IABEE and JABEE at the international level. FTUI has also been assessed by the regional assessment agency, ASEAN University Network.

THE World University Rankings is a global performance table that assesses research-intensive universities on their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. THE WUR uses a standardisation approach for each indicator and then combines the indicators into a proportion of performance indicators. The standardisation approach used is based on the distribution of data within a particular indicator, where THE calculates a cumulative probability function and evaluates which indicators a particular institution falls within that function.
