UI Collaboration with UC Berkeley, Presents Collaborative Research Symposium

The Faculty of Engineering at the Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) and the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS) organised a joint symposium on Friday and Saturday (13-14/10). Universitas Indonesia and UC Berkeley Collaborative Research Symposium was held under the title “Scholars Engagement Programme for Natural Resources-based Research and Innovation”.

In this symposium, on the first day (13/10), researchers from FTUI presented the results of the research they had carried out over the past year. The researchers were Prof Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, Prof Akhmad Hidayatno, Dr Muhamad Sahlan, and Dr Basari.

In addition, FTUI lecturers/young researchers, Nadhilah Reyseliani supervised by Prof. Daniel M. Kammen, Safira Candra Asih supervised by Prof. Seung-Wuk Lee, and Syahrul Ramdani supervised by Prof. Steven Connely, also presented the results of their 1-year visiting research at UC Berkeley. Their research covered topics such as biotechnology, biomedical engineering, and energy transition.

The Rector of Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, expressed his hope for the programme, “We hope that the programme that has been implemented can provide wider benefits for the UI academic community in particular and the Indonesian people in general.”

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, gave an overview of the programme’s journey, which began with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UI and LPS on 25 March 2022. Then, on 22 April 2022, UI Rector, Dean of FTUI, and Dean of the College of Engineering, UC Berkeley, Tsu-Jae King Liu, signed a cooperation agreement between UI and UCB, witnessed by Dr. Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Chairman of the LPS Board of Commissioners. The programme also involves a research visit between UI and UC Berkeley in February 2023.

On Saturday, 14 October 2023, the symposium was attended by two speakers from UC Berkeley. Prof. Seung Wuk Lee from the Department of Bioengineering gave a presentation on Bionanotechnology, while George Anwar, Ph.D., from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, spoke on Mechatronics.

After the two speakers from UC Berkeley delivered their materials, the four researchers from UI above also delivered their respective materials and were moderated by Dr.rer.pol. Romadhani Ardi, S.T., M.T. The symposium was followed by presentations from young FTUI lecturers who shared their experiences while conducting research at UC Berkeley.
