University of Leeds Computer Professor Gives Public Lecture at FTUI, Raising the Topic of Energy Efficiency in Cloud Computing Technology

Prof Karim Djemame, Professor of the University of Leeds Computer School, gave a public lecture at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), on Thursday (26/10). The public lecture, organised by the Electrical Engineering Study Programme, was delivered at the MRPQ Building of the FTUI Electrical Engineering Department with the title “Energy Efficiency in Cloud Computing”. The public lecture was guided by the Moderator, Naufan Raharya, Ph.D., Lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering FTUI. This public lecture was attended by lecturers and students of the FTUI Electrical Engineering Study Programme.

In his public lecture, Prof Karim began his presentation with what is meant by Cloud Computing. According to his presentation, Cloud Computing is one of the new technologies that provides services to consumers with a pay-as-you-go model. This technology offers ICT-based services through the internet and the use of virtualisation by providing computing resources.

Furthermore, Prof Karim said, “In Cloud Computing, the Data Centre is the core of this technology consisting of network servers, cables, resources, and others. The Data Centre also has the function of hosting running applications and storing business information. However, high performance is always the most important concern in Cloud Computing Data Centres, which of course has an impact on energy consumption. The main challenge of this technology is to balance system performance and power consumption by reducing energy consumption without negatively impacting the performance and quality of service provided. There are many techniques and algorithms proposed to achieve efficient energy utilisation in the use of Cloud Computing technology, namely using VM Migration, Resource Consolidation, and Orchestration in Cloud Computing,” he said.

Met from a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, said “Technological advances have given a new colour to computing technology called Cloud Computing. This technology is a model that can monitor, store, and process data online even though it will have an impact on energy consumption. However, Prof Karim’s research on how to make energy efficient from the use of Cloud Computing technology. Hopefully, the knowledge conveyed by Prof Karim can be used as a new understanding and insight for the FTUI Electrical Engineering students in their application in lectures,” he said.

Prof Karim Djemame is a Professor of Computer School, at the University of Leeds United Kingdom. He has published many scientific publications in various international journals. He is also a member of IEEE and the British Computer Society (BCS) Member. In 1998, he completed his Doctoral Programme at the University of Glasgow until he joined as a Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Leeds in the same year.
