“Communication is a type of social process that is closely related to human activities”. This was conveyed by Daud Joseph, Director of Operations and Safety of PT Transportasi Jakarta at the KATALIS IKM FTUI 2023 event at Balairung UI (4/11). Mr. Jos, Daud Joseph’s nickname, also said that communication is the most important part of leadership.
“Leadership is the ability to influence and convince people to work together towards a certain goal. Communication is the only way to influence and convince,” said the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering alumni class of ’97 in front of the 500 FTUI freshmen class of 2023.
Mr. Jos further explained that communication is divided into 2 types, namely verbal and non-verbal. When being a leader, non-verbal communication is used more than verbal communication. He pointed out that the way he dresses formally is one way of non-verbal communication in the sense that he respects the forum he attends and the participants as high as possible.
Good communication made Mr. Jos able to make various achievements for Transjakarta. “Among them, in 2016, the number of Transjakarta bus units was only 300, but today (4/11) the number of buses has reached 4,692 units. Next, the number of corridors which was originally only 12 routes, has now increased to 240 routes. Finally, the number of customers from 300,000 per day to 1,128,000 per day.”
Mr. Jos also shared tips on becoming a leader for FTUI students. Among them, the advantage of being an FTUI student is the ability to think structurally and logically. Thus, FTUI students can use it to communicate with the same pattern. Next is to keep learning. Communication skills can be formed by learning with others. For example, by organizing to meet other people and learn to convince them. In fact, according to him, do not eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner alone. This is to be trained to continue communicating.
“Faculty of Engineering UI has a long experience in producing the best graduates. I hope after going through this activity process, the new students can have an entrepreneurial spirit, wherever they work later,” said the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU.
