Professor of Internal Combustion Engine FTUI, Prof. Bambang Sugiarto, Passed Away

Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI) mourns the passing of one of its pillars, Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Sugiarto M.Eng. He passed away on Tuesday, November 14 at Dharmais Hospital Jakarta. Prof. Bambang, who was familiarly called Prof. Bang Sugi, was a Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering FTUI and had served as Dean of FTUI for the 2008-2014 period.

Known as the only Internal Combustion Engine expert at the University of Indonesia, Prof. Bambang has made outstanding contributions during his 37 years as a lecturer and researcher at FTUI. The Internal Combustion Engine or internal combustion motor that he works on, includes gasoline and diesel engines that drive vehicles/automobiles, ships and some airplanes as well as being used in diesel power generation systems.

Prof. Bambang Sugiarto’s career began to take off when he won research funds for Pertamina’s lubricant product profile in 1995 and research funds from the Osaka Gas Foundation in the same year. During his time at FTUI, the scope of his research was quite broad and involved various aspects, ranging from biofuels, bio-additives, and biogasoline to master plan policies for gas stations in Jakarta.

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST, M.Eng, IPU, expressed his condolences on the passing of Prof. Bambang, “The deceased has dedicated his life to education, research, and community service. Extraordinary achievements have been presented, especially when he served as Dean of FTUI, nurturing and serving with full dedication to the entire FTUI academic community. We express our highest appreciation for his dedication and are committed to continuing his noble ideals in bringing technology that benefits society.”

Prof. Bambang Sugiarto was born in Jakarta on July 13, 1961, completed his Bachelor of Engineering at FTUI in 1985, and continued his Masters and Doctoral studies at Hokkaido University. In 2007, he was inaugurated as an FTUI Professor with an inaugural speech entitled “Contributing Internal Combustion Motors amid Rapid Development.”

Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering FTUI, Dr. Agus S. Pamitran, S.T., M.Eng., said, “Prof. Bambang has played many roles in processing Indonesia’s biological resources into fuel through his excellent research. Not only as a researcher, he is also known as a lecturer who is familiar with students. May his dreams and hopes in the field of technology be continued by his students and researchers.”

Prof. Bambang’s works are scattered in various journals and proceedings both at the National and International levels, covering various topics such as improving the safety of shophouses, propane flame height, the effect of adding LPG gas on motorcycle performance, and many more. His scientific legacy and dedication will continue to be remembered in the development of technology in Indonesia and the world.
