Mechanical Engineering Department Students Learn the Cooling System Load in a Building Through Cooling Load Software Workshop

On Monday (11/27), the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia System held a Cooling Load Software Workshop to estimate the cooling system load in a building. This workshop was attended by students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Idrus Alhamid and Dr. Ir. Budihardjo, Dipl.-Ing.

Sasya Dusiana Famaretha and Gede Titanandana who are graduates of the Department of Mechanical Engineering were also present as resource persons at this workshop. Currently, both of them serve as Mechanical Engineers at PT Bimatekno Karyatama Konsultan (BECA). Sasya and Titan presented material on HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) design by utilising E20 and Autodesk Revit software.

“Generally, HVAC systems are used in commercial buildings, ranging from cafes, and high-rise buildings, to auditoriums. To fulfil the diverse needs of the HVAC system, it is necessary to vary the cooling and heating capacity according to the room layout. Today, HVAC systems are even capable of controlling ambient conditions, including temperature, humidity, and air movement,” Sasya explained.

Gede also added, “There are many software that can be used in designing HVAC systems, including E20 and Autodesk Revit. These two applications have different functions but are interconnected. E20 is a software to estimate the cooling system load in a building. Meanwhile, Autodesk Revit is a software for building design modelling. By combining these two applications, Mechanical Engineers can design HVAC systems comprehensively according to building needs.”

On a different occasion, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU. as dean of FTUI gave his response, “Through this workshop, we hope that students can understand how software can be optimised to design HVAC systems in a building. In addition, it is also expected that students can better understand the role of Mechanical Engineer in the planning team.”
