3 Teams from SPE UI SC Representing FTUI Achieve Outstanding Success at Derrick 2024 Competition

Three teams from SPE UI SC (Society of Petroleum Engineers Universitas Indonesia Student Chapter), representing students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), have once again achieved remarkable success at Derrick 2024, a prestigious competition in the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors organized by PEM AKAMIGAS. Across various categories, the FTUI teams secured top positions with innovative projects that showcased intellectual excellence and a commitment to sustainability.

Team Serendipity: 2nd Place in Oil and Gas Quiz Competition

Team Serendipity, consisting of Sheilamita Alya Putri (Bioprocess Engineering 2022), Aurelia Gunawan (Chemical Engineering 2022), and Fauzia Nur Rahmani (Chemical Engineering 2022), earned 2nd place in the Oil and Gas Quiz Competition. The event focused on “Optimizing Energy in the Oil and Gas Industry by Prioritizing Artificial Intelligence Technology based on the Blue Economy for Sustainable Energy.”

Over two months, the team tackled numerous challenges that tested their knowledge and strategic thinking about using artificial intelligence to support blue economy principles. Out of 28 participating teams, only 12 made it to the final round, held virtually via Zoom.

“This experience was incredibly valuable as it not only honed our knowledge in oil and gas but also pushed us to think critically and strategically in addressing future energy challenges,” said Sheilamita Alya Putri, a member of Team Serendipity.

Team Rawrneering: 1st Place in Renewable Energy Competition

Team Rawrneering, composed of Nadzwa Adzlia Chinara (Bioprocess Engineering 2022), Firnanda Ayman Al-Zahwari (Bioprocess Engineering 2022), and Farrell Izdihar Gauzhan (Chemical Engineering 2022), achieved 1st place in the Renewable Energy Competition with their innovative project, RefineSmart.

This project integrates hybrid renewable energy systems into oil and gas refinery operations, utilizing artificial intelligence to optimize energy use.

RefineSmart offers numerous advantages, including integrating renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and biomass with natural gas combined cycle power plants, reducing net costs by 45% and greenhouse gas emissions by 44.6%. Economically, the project delivers a positive Net Present Value (NPV) of $15 million and an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 12.5%, while cutting Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) by 20%. Additionally, the project incorporates an AI-based maintenance system capable of accurately detecting corrosion risks, reducing maintenance costs, and extending infrastructure lifespan.

“Our RefineSmart project demonstrates that sustainability and efficiency can go hand-in-hand in the energy sector. By integrating AI and renewable energy, we hope this solution can serve as a tangible step toward global energy transition,” said Nadzwa Adzlia Chinara, a member of Team Rawrneering.

Team Trifecta: 2nd Place with Environmentally-Focused Energy Project

The team of Syamila Dinda Andira, Hapsari Aulia Wicaksono, and Alin Syifa Hasani from Bioprocess Engineering FTUI secured 2nd place in the Derrick x Reaction 2024 category with their innovative project titled “Sustainable Buoyancy Energy Storage in Wind Energy Systems.”

This project integrates buoyancy-based energy storage technology with environmentally friendly materials, offering a sustainable solution to support offshore wind power systems.

The project boasts several advantages, including improving energy efficiency by utilizing underwater buoyancy structures to store energy from offshore wind turbines. Additionally, the use of HDPE materials supports marine ecosystem restoration by fostering biofilm growth, which aids in habitat recovery. A chitosan coating on the materials also absorbs heavy metals such as lead (Pb), helping reduce ocean pollution.

The project is implemented in the coastal region of Jepara, Central Java. This region faces challenges related to marine pollution from maritime activities and fossil fuels while offering significant potential for hydropower energy.

“Through this project, we aim to demonstrate that technological innovation is about energy efficiency and maintaining ecological balance. We hope this solution can positively impact the environment and coastal communities,” said Syamila Dinda Andira, a member of Team Trifecta.

The winners were announced on November 23, 2024, after an intensive series of online competitions. This achievement highlights the dedication and expertise of FTUI students in creating innovative, sustainable energy solutions that positively impact society.

The success of FTUI students at Derrick 2024 proves that Indonesia’s young generation can compete at the national and international levels, bringing significant changes to the energy and environmental sectors.
