On Monday, January 28, 2022, at 05.00 WIB, Dra. Iriantine Karnaya, M.Ars., a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), passed away at the age of 72 at the Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital (RSPAD), Jakarta, and was buried in the San Diego Hills. Iriantine Karnaya is an FTUI fine arts expert who is also an Indonesian sculptor.
Throughout her life, hundreds of her works are displayed throughout Indonesia. Some of Ms. Tine’s art installations — Iriantine Karnaya as she is known — have won awards, such as a bronze award from the Museum of Modern Art Anvers, Belgium, for her work “Honesty III” in 2004, an award from the Sharjah Museum of Modern Art, United Emirates Arab, for the work “Flower Power” in 2002, Winner of Best Work (Gula & Ant, 1995, bronze) in the Sculpture Exhibition “Trienal II”, National Gallery, Jakarta, and bronze award from WHO (Maternal and Child Health) for the work “Love” in 1997.
The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU, conveyed his condolences and said, “As an artist, Ms. Tine is a visionary sculptor. As a teacher, she is also one of the best art teachers at FTUI. Mrs. Tine’s works always provide contrasts that blend well and leave a deep impression on those who enjoy her art. She is famous as a sculptor who explores metal and wood. Ms. Tine’s works can be found in FTUI, UI Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UI Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UI Central Library, UI Medical Faculty IMERI, as well as in Terminal 3, Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Jakarta,” said Dean Heri.
Tine’s departure also left a deep impression on his colleagues. Dr. Ir. Achmad Hery Fuad, M.Eng., Head of the Department of Architecture, FTUI said, “Ms. Tine is a wonderful colleague. Her vision, creativity, and dedication to art are admirable. We last joined the development team for the Adhyaksa Loka complex in Ceger in 2014. Ms. Tine was part of the design team for the 17m high Adhyaksa Conscience Monument with a giant Adhyaksa star 5m high, while I joined the Master Plan and Architecture design team.”
Iriantine Karnaya was born in Rangkasbitung, Banten, on January 9, 1950. She graduated from the Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology. She then continued her master’s education at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia. Tine is active as a lecturer in Basic Fine Arts at the Department of Architecture, FTUI, and a Sculpture Studio Lecturer at the Jakarta Arts Institute.
In the period 1996 – 2017, she organized five solo exhibitions and several joint exhibitions. The first solo exhibition in 1996 at the Ministry of Education and Culture, Gambir, Jakarta, the second solo exhibition in 1997 at the Soemardja Gallery, Bandung Institute of Technology, Bandung, the third solo exhibition in 1999 at the Lontar Gallery, Jakarta, the fourth solo exhibition with the title “Symbolic Narrative” in 2000 at the National Gallery, Jakarta and the fifth solo exhibition entitled “Menu Today” was held in June 2007 at the National Museum, Jakarta.
Tine was also involved in the joint exhibition “Mata-Mata Jakarta” at the National Gallery, Jakarta, in 2005 the Bronze Sculpture Exhibition, Siena, Italy; Jakarta Biennale “Beyond The Limits and Its Challenges” at the National Gallery, Jakarta (2006), and in 2007 held a joint exhibition with Toyamura at the Biennale, Japan, a joint exhibition of Group Nine in the Netherlands in 2008 participated in a joint exhibition at the National Archives Building Jakarta, in 2016 she joined the 9+1 Group Fine Arts Exhibition “Homage to Yanuar Ernawati” at Cemara 6 Galeri, Jakarta, and lastly in 2017 the deceased and the students of the Department of Architecture FTUI exhibited at Terminal 3, Soekarno Hatta Airport , Jakarta.
“Besides the installation of works of art left by Mrs. Tine, she also passed on knowledge and knowledge in the arts to her students. Hopefully this will be a field of charity for him. Goodbye Ms. Tine. God willing, Ms. Tine’s students will follow in your footsteps, giving a touch of beauty to every architectural work they produce,” said Dean Heri.
