Rapid changes in competition, user demands, technological trends, and dynamics of changing regulations have required organizations to be able to respond to these challenges and adapt quickly. Therefore, the process of value creation and technology-based innovation is one of the things that drive competitive advantage that must be owned by organizations that are in the process of becoming agile organizations to remain competitive in the upcoming industrial 5.0 era.
“The design thinking approach can be an effective framework to help create value at various scales of implementation, starting from the process of developing technology-based product and service innovations, as well as the process of designing and managing organizational operations,” said Prof. Dr. -Eng. Amalia Suzianti, S.T., M.Sc., in the inauguration ceremony of her Professor which was held online and offline on Saturday (15/10).
In his speech entitled “Towards Agile and Resilient Organizations Through Value Creation and Technology-Based Innovation”, Prof. Amalia said design thinking is understood as a formal creative problem-solving method intended to encourage innovation. Design thinking is usually characterized by three characteristics, namely a human-centered perspective (user-centered approach), utilizing creativity for the “problem framing” process, and the use of prototyping to test product concepts.
In the last decade, Prof. Amalia said that the Product Development and Innovation Laboratory, Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) has implemented various research and community service grants that focus on the process of creating value through business model innovation and product or service innovation solutions. Some of these studies include the design of the financial technology (Fintech) industry service development strategy, proposals for service flow design solutions and evaluation of Transjakarta digital control room designs, digital platform designs for reporting Jakarta flood solutions through the Flood application, and design development strategies and platforms for the development of digital innovations. with a digital e-cluster design thinking approach for supply chain efficiency for coffee SMEs exports to the European Union.
In the last multi-year research on the topic of e-clusters, there were two main outcomes that the researchers succeeded in producing. The first output is the design of the Bionic Farm application to connect all stakeholders in the Indonesian coffee export supply chain and encourage cooperation between exporters to meet the demands of the export market. The second output of the follow-up research also analyzes the contribution of the cluster platform to organizational agility.
By implementing an integrated system through the design of the Bionic Farm application, aspects that affect the effectiveness and efficiency of the supply chain system such as cost, time, and information flow can be optimized properly. Through the development and utilization of digital platforms that can be directly accessed by all stakeholders, as well as by cutting links in the supply chain, it is hoped that Indonesian coffee SMEs will have greater opportunities to compete in the international market.
Research conducted by Prof. Amalia and her colleagues has provided insight into the reality of value creation and technology-based innovation through a design thinking approach and she highlighted the need for a user experience creation process that will influence the success of innovation and business strategy. The adoption of a design thinking approach in the strategic realm has also been empirically proven to be able to influence the challenges of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) which focuses on new value propositions that are relevant and contribute significantly to organizational competitiveness and agility.
Currently, Prof. Amalia serves as Director of Human Resources at UI (2022-present). His organizational experiences at FTUI include being the Head of the Product Development and Innovation Laboratory of the Department of Industrial Engineering (2012 – present) and the Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering (2018 – 2022). Prof. Amalia completed her undergraduate education in Industrial Engineering in 1996 – 2000. Then, at Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus, Germany, she earned a Master of Science (MSc.) Technology and Innovation Management, in 2004. Prof. Amalia completed her doctoral studies, Docteur en Sciences de l’Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing) Innovation System Design, at the Technische Universität Berlin – University of Luxembourg, in 2010.
The inauguration of professors which was held today was led by the Rector of UI, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, SE, MA, Ph.D., at the Makara Art Center and broadcast live virtually through the UI Teve Youtube channel. The event was attended by guests, including the CEO of The Wisemen & Company, Jennifer Heryanto; representatives from PT Wiratman, Tantri Heryantina; and Associate Professor of Bioengineering, New York University, Dr.-Ing Azhar Zam, S.Si., M.Sc.
