Discussing Urban Planning Topics, PWK FTUI and University of Pennsylvania Organize Public Lecture 2023

Master Program in Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) held Public Lecturer 2023 with the title “Research Trends in Urban Planning” with guest speaker Eugenie L. Birch, Ph.D., FAICP., The University of Pennsylvania USA and guided by moderator Dr.-Ing. Ova Candra Dewi. S.T., M.Sc., GP.

Public Lecture 2023 was held online through Zoom Meeting, on (28/08). This activity was also a series of activities from the Bootcamp for Academic Writing 2023 organized by PWK FTUI.

The issue discussed in this activity is very interesting, namely about Urban Planning. Prof. Eugenie revealed that “Urban Planning is a form of regulating the use of space that focuses on physical form, economic function, and social impact. This means that urban planning becomes governance in urban planning that refers to technical, architectural, social and political interests. It is, therefore, a technical profession, an endeavour that involves political will and public participation, as well as an academic discipline.”

Furthermore, he revealed that Urban Planning currently seems to be a trend in the scope of research. This is related to the urgency of the current situation which is indeed needed in improving city governance.

“Urban planning is certainly a crucial issue that is closely related to the development of open land. It involves goal setting, data collection and analysis, forecasting, design, strategic thinking, and public consultation. Thus, an urban plan is not designed by default, but requires planning for change,” Prof. Eugine explained.

The topic raised is a topic that is currently often discussed so it provides a significant response from the participants of this Public Lecture. The participants were students from the PWK FTUI Program, academics, and also BRAIN 2023 participants.

On a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermasnyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, said “The topic of Urban Planning is currently a topic that will see a very significant response because this topic seeks to outline solutions that aim to improve or re-qualify existing urban areas, as well as create new urbanization in certain areas. Hopefully, the knowledge provided by Prof. Eugenie can be well absorbed by the participants so that it becomes a provision and new insights,” he said.
