Graduated as FTUI’s 500th Doctorate with GPA 4.0, Arie Pangesti Aji Designs a New THz Antenna Coupled Bolometer Design

Arie Pangesti Aji is a double degree doctoral program student between the University of Indonesia (UI) and Shizuoka University, Japan, who was declared the 500th Doctor in the 154th Doctoral promotion from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering (FT) University of Indonesia (UI). At his doctoral promotion session, Arie presented the results of his research which resulted in a new design of a THz antenna-coupled bolometer.

The need to improve the performance of THz wave detection devices prompted Arie to research and design a new THz antenna-coupled bolometer design. This research was written in his dissertation entitled “Improvement of Antenna Coupled Bolometer Performance at Terahertz Frequency Through a Combination of Antenna and Heater with High Resistance”. Arie conducted research under the guidance of Prof. Eko Tjipto Rahardjo from the Department of Electrical Engineering FTUI and Prof. Hiroshi Inokawa of Shizuoka University.

Arie said Bolometer has advantages in terms of economical price and the ability to operate at room temperature. “My research resulted in the design of a new THz antenna-coupled bolometer design which consists of an antenna made of gold and a heater and temperature sensor (thermistor) made of titanium with a structure suspended above the air cavity on a silicon dioxide substrate. From the results of the simulation, fabrication, and thermal-based analysis carried out, it can be concluded that the combination of a bolometer structure with high heat resistance and a folded dipole antenna with high impedance can improve the performance of the antenna coupled bolometer both electrically and optically,” said Arie.

Opened in 2000, the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI) currently has seven study programs for the Doctoral program with a total of 500 Doctoral graduates. The number of graduates of each study program is as follows: Civil Engineering Doctoral Study Program, 67 people, Mechanical Engineering Doctoral Study Program, 99 people, Electrical Engineering Doctoral Study Program, 154 people, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Doctoral Study Program, 60 people, Doctoral Study Program 65 people in Chemical Engineering, 20 people in the Architecture Doctoral Study Program and 18 people in the Industrial Engineering Doctoral Study Program.

Regarding Arie’s research, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU said, “It is hoped that in the future through this research it will be possible to integrate THz antenna-coupled bolometers with other technologies, such as signal processing systems, terahertz optics, or wireless communication platforms. Better integration will enable wider applications and more effective use of THz antenna-coupled bolometers in various fields,” said Prof. Harry.

Thanks to his research, Arie Pangesti Aji won a doctorate with a GPA of 4.0 and a Cum Laude predicate at his doctoral promotion session which was declared a pass by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI) on Monday, 05 June 2023. The Doctoral Promotion Session was chaired by the Chair of the Session, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU., with Promoter Prof. Dr. Ir. Eko Tjipto Rahardjo, M.Sc, and Co-Promoter, Prof. Hiroshi Inokawa and Dr. Ir. Catur Apriono, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. The Examiner Team consists of Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhamad Asvial, M.Eng., Prof. Dr. Ir. Harry Sudibyo, DEA, Prof. Dr. Ir. Fitri Yuli Zulkifli, S.T., M.Sc., Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng., and Yusuf Nur Wijayanto, Ph.D.
