The Kalabia Evo 5 car has succeeded in winning the urban concept gasoline car category in SEM Asia 2016 in Manila. Right now, the team is preparing the winning car to compete in the next level in London. With a record of 275 km/ liter of gasoline, the car is all set to compete in the prestigious Shell Eco-Marathon Drivers World Championship in the Urban Concept category with Gasoline to determine the fastest and most energy efficient car in the world.
UI’s Sadewa Team will be one of the three Indonesia Student Teams to pass the early selection to compete in the Shell Eco-marathon Drivers World Championship (DWC) held as part of the Shell Eco-marathon (SEM) Europe 2016 which will be held on 30 June – 03 July 2016. The opportunity was part of the reward for the Sadewa UI Team after winning the first prize of Urban Concept category (car with city car concept with energy efficiency) with gasoline fuel with their Kalabia Evo 5 car in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2016 last March. With the winning record of 275 km/liter of gasoline, the Sadewa UI team was invited to compete in the qualification stage of the Shell Eco-marathon DWC Competititon as part of the Shell Eco-marathon Europe 2016 in London, UK.
The Shell Eco-marathon DWC is a new competition within the Shell Eco-Marathon, and this year for the first time was held within the SEM Europe Competition. This competition is very important as an automotive innovation technology and energy efficiency competition for students from all over the world. The Shell Eco-marathon DWC is devoted for the UrbanConcept car with Internal Combustion Engine.
For the first time in the 30 years of Shell Eco-marathon, the UrbanConcept teams from around the world will gather and compete to determine the fastest and most energy efficient car in the world. The difference swith the Shell Eco-marathon competition which focuses on the energy efficiency and the winner was determined by the farthest distance reached with one liter of fuel, the Shell Eco-marathon DWC determine the winner by looking for the fastest car to reach the finish line and also the most efficient in fuel usage. The amount of fuel used in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC competition will be determined by the best result in SEM Europe Qualification.
The participants of the UrbanConcept Shell Eco-marathon DWC London Competition are those that passed the early qualification of each region of the Shell Eco-marathon: Asia, USA and Europe. For Asia, from the Shell Eco-marathon Asia last March, there are only five teams invited to compete in the qualification stage of the Shell Eco-marathon DWC. Three teams came from Indonesia, and one is a team from Universitas Indonesia, Sadewa Team. The team won the first place in the Gasoline Fuel UrbanConcept category. Gasoline is one of the three energy competed: internal combustion, battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell which will be used in the UrbanConcept car competing in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC.
The SEM Europe will be held in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, UK. The Sadewa team and other competing teams from all regions must compete in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC qualification round. The qualification requires the team to pass technical inspection, pass the SEM Europe qualification test (three trials of the SEM Europe track, with at least two time passing the finish line), the car must meet at least 90% of the record set in each SEM in their region. However, participating teams from outside of Europe will not be competing in the Shell Eco Marathon Europe (SEME) which will take place in the same location.
In this competition, the committee also required that each competing car in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC qualification round to meet the requirement of car braking within a maximum range of 20 meters when driven at a speed of 50 km per hour. Braking tests must be done before the car leave for London. The Committee of Shell Eco -marathon DWC will later give each team twice the chance to test their brake in European SEM. This is to ensure that the car will have a good level of safety and security. Only the team with the best qualification result in SEM Europe will compete in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC. The Shell Eco-marathon DWC will be held in three heats with eight teams each. Those who will advance to the final round of the Shell Eco-marathon DWC are the two teams which reach the finish line the fastest, and two teams in second fastest position of each heats. Totaling to eight cars competing in the final round of the Shell Eco-marathon DWC.
To fulfill all the new requirements made by the Shell Eco-marathon DWC, the Indonesian teams (including Sadewa Team) will have to make a few adjustments to their cars. The Sadewa Team Manager, Alfian Ibnu Pratama stated that currently they are making a few adjustment to their Kalabia Evo 5 car with the gasoline fuel especially in their break system due to the rule in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC London 2016 which requires the car to make a break at 50km/h speed with a range of 20 meters.
They are currently preparing two drivers (main and back up drivers) which will drive the Kalabia Evo 5 in the Shell Eco-marathon DWC London. As we all know the the length of the track at the Shell Eco -marathon DWC is longer than the track for SEM Asia. The track will have an uphill and downhill track with elevation between 3 meters to 12 meters. The drivers are required to drive the car three times around the track and pass the finish line. One round of the track in SEM Europe is 2.2440 meters. For the Shell Eco-marathon DWC competition, a driver of the UrbanConcept car must complete three times around the track. (FTUI PR Office)
