FTUI and Sucofindo Hold Pre-Event Seminar on Hackathon SCIENCE HackFest 2023

Sucofindo collaborated with the FTUI Career Development Centre (CDC FTUI) to organise a seminar as a pre-event series: Sucofindo Goes to Campus (04/07). This activity is the opening for the hackathon activity, Science HackFest 2023, which will be held this July.

This hackathon activity is an open innovation competition to develop innovative technology-based solutions for solving problems in the industrial world. This hackathon encourages the spirit of collaboration and teamwork to create revolutionary new solutions. Selected participants will also get many benefits, such as expert mentoring, a digital boot camp, relationships, portfolios, and other prizes.

This Pre-Event Seminar raised one of the issues raised at the SCIENCE HackFest 2023 Hackathon as the theme, namely “AI for Corrosion Detection: Paving the Way for Industry Advancement”. As guest speakers, Professor of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Johny Wahyuadi Soedarsono, D.E.A., and Arief Wisnu Kuncoro, S.T., M.T., from Sucofindo, The two speakers discussed corrosion prevention using AI technology to prevent significant corrosion failure.

“AI technology has begun to be used to prevent corrosion failure in the industrial world. Especially those that can result in unscheduled downtime, environmental contamination, personal injury, and death, requiring significant effort in corrosion control at the design and operational stages. Corrosion inspection is carried out to minimise the damage that may occur, “explained Arief Wisnu Kuncoro.

Prof. Johny also explained that currently, various pipe inspection methods can be used, such as infrared light, pigging with the Magnetic Flux Leakage method, and other methods, including visual inspection. “However, most of these methods are still carried out manually, which causes several drawbacks, such as long inspection times because it involves human labour and a low level of accuracy, especially if the inspection is still carried out by direct visual observation. For this reason, the use of computer vision is one way for observations to be made quickly,” he said.

It is hoped that the presence of speakers from academia and practitioners will provide new knowledge and motivate the participants, especially fellow students, to be more enthusiastic about participating in this hackathon activity. With this pre-event activity, it is hoped that FTUI students will be more enthusiastic about creating a better future through technological innovation. Apart from that, participants can also learn more about the issues raised in this hackathon programme and submit proposals to take part in it. To take part in this programme, participants can view more detailed information through the official Sucofindo website or the CDC FTUI social media.

Currently, Sucofindo has also collaborated in the fields of education, research, community service, and business development. Also, in 2023, there will be a collaboration between FTUI and Sucofindo regarding postgraduate education programmes. This activity means further strengthening the cooperation between Sucofindo and FTUI. In the future, there will be more opportunities for collaboration between FTUI and Sucofindo.
