Light-based Smart Technology: From Imaging to Laser Surgery

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) through the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE) held a Research Result Seminar entitled “Light-Based Smart Technologies: From Imaging to Laser Surgery”. The seminar featured keynote speaker, Dr.-Ing. Azhar Zam, Associate Professor of Bioengineering and Division of Engineering New York University in Abu Dhabi. The event took place at MRPQ Building 4th Floor, DTE FTUI, Wednesday (9/8/23).

The seminar was opened by remarks from the Head of FTUI Biomedical Engineering Study Program, Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng. In his speech, Dr. Basari said, “This seminar is expected to add new insights and knowledge for the sustainability of other excellent research in RCBE and the Department of Electrical Engineering FTUI. I also hope that this seminar can be a spark of enthusiasm to continue to explore innovations in developing science and technology.”

In his presentation, Dr. Azhar shared the renewed interest in the potential of light-based sensing and imaging. “This has resulted in the need for non-invasive, low-cost, and label-free sensing and imaging modalities to diagnose and monitor treatment. Light-based smart technologies combining advanced optical methods and artificial intelligence (AI) are used to detect, measure, and quantify what is invisible to address unmet needs in biology and medicine.”

To that end, in his research, Dr. Azhar developed smart devices using novel optical technologies, ranging from early diagnosis to providing feedback for laser surgery. This very interesting seminar session was closed with a question and answer session where the seminar participants very actively asked questions regarding the study of new non-invasive and low-cost imaging technology developed by Dr.-Ing,. Azhar Zam.

Met on a separate occasion, Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU said, “This seminar is a very relevant and important platform in exploring the potential and latest developments in light-based smart technology. From imaging to laser surgery, this topic has a significant impact in the medical and technological world.”

Prof. Heri also hopes that this seminar can provide deep insights and stimulate cross-disciplinary collaboration to optimize the use of this advanced technology for human welfare.
