The penetration of inverter-based variable renewable energy generation in power systems, especially on isolated grids, can cause a decrease in the value of system inertia. Low inertia can cause frequency instability, namely high nadir frequency deviation and steeper frequency change rate. Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with certain control systems have been widely used to maintain frequency stability, one of which is through the provision of virtual inertia (VI).
Fauzan Hanif Jufri, a doctoral student from the Department of Electrical Engineering FTUI in his dissertation discusses research aimed at developing a VI controller method using a lower BESS capacity based on BESS State of Charge (SoC) returns. In his dissertation entitled Virtual Inertial Controller Method Based on State of Charge Recovery with Artificial Neural Network Modeling for Battery Energy Storage System Capacity Optimization on Isolated Low Inertia Grid, Fauzan proposed a method that applies generalized three-stage gain controller parameters.
“The three-stage booster strategy is used to change the BESS operation mode to provide VI power, reduce BESS capacity requirements, and restore the BESS SoC. While the generalization process uses Artificial Neural Network (JST) modeling with training data sets obtained from the parameter tuning process in various operating scenarios,” said Fauzan regarding his dissertation.
Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the nadir frequency deviation and reduce the steepness of the frequency change rate with a lower BESS capacity, which is about 50% of the capacity required by conventional methods.
“The method developed by the Doctor from DTE is a new contribution from the usual conventional method that is often used. It is hoped that this method can become a frequency controller in low-inertia power systems. Not only that, the DTE Doctoral research is also expected to be further elaborated and its impact will provide benefits to the power system,” said Dean of FTUI, Prof. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU.
