On Monday (22/1), the Faculty Academic Senate (SAF) held a meeting with the Interdisciplinary Engineering Education and Research Unit (UP2IK) regarding the plan to establish a new department, namely the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering. In this meeting, UP2IK presented a briefing to the Faculty Academic Senate (SAF) of FTUI.
Currently, UP2IK oversees three interdisciplinary study programs: Energy System Engineering (TSE), Regional and City Planning (PWK), and Engineer Education Program (PPI). In addition, UP2IK also oversees three institutes: the Institute of Energy Studies (IES), the Institute of Urban Planning and Smart Cities (IUS), and the Institute of Biosystem and Bioengineering (IBB). Due to its diverse functions, UP2IK intends to form the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering for the TSE, PWK, and PPI study programs, which have functions aligned with other departments.
The Head of UP2IK, Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA., stated, “Based on the FTUI Dean’s Regulation No. 1 of 2022, the management of education in study programs should be under the department. Therefore, the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering is essentially created to be a home and container for interdisciplinary study programs. Previously, we also conducted benchmarking at ITB and ITS, which also have similar study programs. In the future, the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering is also expected to have home-based lecturers. However, during the transition period of this department, monodisciplinary lecturers can be used to meet the needs of interdisciplinary lecturers.”
The Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering aims to become a centre for excellent and impactful interdisciplinary engineering education and research that is not possessed by monodisciplinary departments. Meanwhile, the goal of establishing this department is to produce graduates with broad interdisciplinary skills who can integrate knowledge from various disciplines to face global challenges.
In a separate meeting, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU, stated, “The results of the discussion in this meeting will be brought to the University Academic Senate (SAU) for further review. The plan to establish the Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering reflects FTUI’s commitment to continuously innovate and adapt to the dynamics of the increasingly complex field of engineering science and technology.”
The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc (Chair of the Faculty Academic Senate); Prof. Dr. Ir. Akhmad Herman Yuwono, M.Phil.Eng (Secretary of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Education and Research Unit), Dr. Ir. Yuskar Lase, DEA; Dr. Eva Fathul Karamah, S.T., M.T; and Dr. Muhammad Hasbi Hanis, S.H., MITL.
