Doctoral Promotion of Faiz Husnayain: Alternative Design and Implementation of Parameter Estimation Techniques on IPMSM

Faiz Husnayain, a doctoral student in engineering at FTUI, conducted research on alternative designs and the implementation of parameter estimation techniques for the Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) to reduce mismatches or discrepancies. Faiz’s research is presented in a dissertation titled “Motor Parameter Identification Method Based on 3D Finite Element Map and Model Reference Adaptive System for Improved Current Control and Decoupling in Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor.” Faiz presented this dissertation at the open promotion session of the Department of Electrical Engineering FTUI (15/01).

Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) motors are commonly used in electric vehicle traction systems and industrial applications. However, IPM motor drives face various challenges, including magnetic saturation, permanent magnet demagnetization, cross-coupling of the d and q axes, and the spatial and temporal harmonic effects on vector controller effectiveness.

“To operate and control the motor, accurate motor parameter identification is required. Mismatch or parameter estimation errors between the controller and the controlled motor often occur when there are changes in temperature or magnetic saturation,” explained Faiz Husnayain.

Furthermore, Faiz Husnayain explained, “The research conducted shows that finite element analysis (FEA) using JMAG tools displays the proposed estimation algorithm, a combination of FEM map and MRAS, can accurately predict the PM temperature value with a temperature coefficient (k) of -0.105% / °C.”

“Research on alternative designs and the implementation of motor parameter estimation techniques on IPMSM is expected to improve the real-time accuracy of motor parameter estimation and, in general, provide benefits to the development of electrical engineering knowledge,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI.

Faiz Husnayain earned his doctoral degree with a GPA of 4.0 and the title of Cum Laude in this doctoral promotion session. He is the 169th doctoral graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering and the 537th from FTUI. The open defence session for Faiz Husnayain was led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Dadang Gunawan, M.Eng., with advisors Prof. Dr-Eng. Ir. Feri Yusivar, M.Eng., and Prof. Dr-Eng. Toshihiko Noguchi, M.Eng., and co-advisor Dr-Ing. Budi Sudiarto, S.T., M.T. Meanwhile, the examination board was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Rudy Setiabudy, DEA, with members including Prof. Ir. Rinaldy Dalimi, M.Sc., Ph.D.; Prof. Dr-Eng. Suroso, M.Eng.; Dr. Ir. Aries Subiantoro, M.Sc.; and Dr-Eng. Abdul Halim, B.Eng., M.Eng.
