Guest Lecture on Material Innovation with AI Machine Learning by Assoc. Prof. Su-mi Hur

Associate Professor Su-mi Hur from Chonnam National University, Gwangju, South Korea, delivered an inspiring guest lecture at the Smart Meeting Room Makara 04 on February 19th. In the lecture titled “Exploring New Frontiers: Machine Learning and Computational Strategies in Materials Design and Engineering,” Assoc. Prof. Su-mi Hur discussed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technology on accelerating the discovery of innovative new materials.

Starting at 10:00, she highlighted the recent developments in applying AI Machine Learning to create materials that are not only functionally optimal but also environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. “This technology can support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially (7) Clean and Affordable Energy and (13) Climate Action.”

The guest lecture was opened by Dr.rer.pol. Romadhani Ardi, S.T., M.T., Manager of Student Affairs, Research, and Community Service at FT UI. Romadhani Ardi acknowledged that Assoc. Prof. Su-mi Hur’s insights and knowledge in the field of material engineering utilizing AI Machine Learning have significant potential to support the university’s vision of sustainable development. This reflects the importance of fostering constructive and sustainable cooperation to realize innovations that support sustainable development goals in material technology.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., Dean of FTUI, emphasized FTUI’s commitment to advancing scholarly development and improving research quality in the future. “We highly appreciate the presence of Assoc. Prof. Su-mi Hur on our campus and her profound insights into material development through the application of AI Machine Learning. Collaborations like these are crucial in advancing research and innovation in the field of material engineering, and we hope this will be the foundation for further collaboration between FT UI and Chonnam National University.”

This guest lecture is also part of the Faculty Mobility Program (FMP) 2024 organized by the Directorate of Education, University of Indonesia. The Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FT UI), successfully won this program, allowing Prof. Su-mi Hur to be at the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DTMM) FT UI for 5 days, from February 19 to 23, 2024. During her visit, Prof. Su-mi Hur not only gave lectures but also conducted workshops and management meetings to discuss potential collaborations between FT UI and Chonnam National University.

Dr. Ir. Jaka Fajar Fatriansyah M.Sc., the Coordinator of FMP 2024, stated that Prof. Su-mi Hur’s visit not only provides new insights into material engineering using AI Machine Learning but also motivates students to pursue careers in academia and research. “It is hoped that the collaboration between FT UI and Chonnam National University will open the door for further innovation in sustainable material development,” he added.
