On Wednesday (2/21), the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), held a guest lecture at the Smart Meeting Room, FTUI Dean’s Office Building. The guest lecture featured Associate Prof. Dr. Md Hasanuzzaman from the University of Malaya. He delivered lectures for three consecutive days as part of the Seminar Series of Future Energy event. The guest lecture on the first day was moderated by Prof. Dr. Ir. Adi Surjosatyo, M.Eng., and attended by students from the Energy Systems Engineering Study Program at FTUI.
To kick off the first day of the guest lecture, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, gave his welcome address, “I extend a warm welcome to all participants and speakers present at the 2024 Seminar Series of Future Energy. We are delighted to organize this event and bring competent speakers in their field. This event aims to provide a platform for knowledge sharing and discussions related to energy. I hope all participants can actively engage in discussions and presentations later.”
In his presentation titled “Energy for Sustainable Development and Sustainability Concept,” Dr. Hasan discussed issues related to energy, both from the demand and supply perspectives. In general, he pointed out that with the increasing global population, the energy demand will continue to rise.
“The choice is how we can reduce energy consumption, or we can increase energy supply. From the supply side, we can see that our energy sector is still dominated by fossil fuels, accounting for about 80%. This has an impact on continuously increasing emissions, with the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere reaching 424 ppm as of May 2023. The next issue is how we can meet the increasing energy demand while reducing CO2 emissions without sacrificing development and economic growth,” explained Dr. Hasan.
Closing his presentation, Dr. Hasan presented three potential solutions to the significant challenges in energy. The first is innovation and the use of green energy technologies. The second is good policies for energy technologies. The third is innovation and the utilization of energy storage technologies.
FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., said, “We highly appreciate the presence of this lecture as we need to pursue sustainable development. This lecture is expected to broaden our insights into sustainable development and provide answers to significant challenges related to future energy.”
