FTUI held a coordination meeting for the Future Engineer curriculum for doctoral programs on March 28, 2024. This meeting was primarily conducted to discuss changes in the UI Rector’s Regulation regarding the implementation of doctoral education within the University of Indonesia.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Harinaldi, M.Eng., Head of the Modernization, Planning, and Supervision Unit at FTUI, stated, “In UI Rector’s Regulation No. 3 of 2024 Article 23 Paragraph (1), there is an increase in the credit load for S3 students, which was previously 42-semester credit units (SKS), to 88 SKS. When broken down, the fulfilment of 88 SKS is obtained from structured courses (20 SKS), research proposal examination (8 SKS), research results examination I (18 SKS), research results examination II (20 SKS), scientific paper publications (18 SKS), and final project and defence (4 SKS). This change only concerns the credit load of S3 students, while the learning techniques remain almost the same.”
In response to this, several proposals were discussed in the meeting, including providing continuous courses (A and B) and offering academic writing courses. However, it must be ensured that the academic writing courses are different from the Research Methodology courses to avoid course repetition. Additionally, FTUI also needs to seek competent educators for these courses.
“We need to approach these changes in the Rector’s Regulation wisely. We also need to make the right decisions. Hopefully, through this discussion, FTUI can promptly implement the new curriculum,” said the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU. According to him, it is important for all parties involved to understand the comprehensive impact and implications of these regulatory changes. Furthermore, active involvement from lecturers, students, and other stakeholders is needed in the process of implementing the new curriculum to ensure its suitability with the needs and developments of the times.
