The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), held a Public Lecture on Construction Safety Management System (SMKK) in the Professional Engineer Program on Saturday (27/04) at the FTUI Salemba Campus. This lecture featured guest speaker Ir. Kusumo Drajad Sutjahjo, ST., Msi., CSP., IPU., ASEAN Eng., who is the Secretary General of the Indonesian Construction Safety Experts Association (PAKKI). The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Fitri Yuli Zulkifli, S.T., M.Sc., IPU., Chair of the Professional Engineer Program at FTUI, along with PPI students, 15 from the regular program and 9 from the RPL program.
Ir. Kusumo presented the topic of the Construction Safety Management System (SMKK). In his presentation, he outlined the importance of construction safety along with its objectives. “Firstly, to ensure compliance with Safety, Health, and Sustainability Standards in the assessment, planning, design, and implementation of construction. The next target is to protect the safety and health of workers and others in construction workplaces (formal & informal); ensure that every construction material and equipment is used safely, healthily, efficiently, and effectively; ensure smooth construction processes; and ensure that construction products can be used, maintained, and dismantled safely and efficiently,” he explained.
Ir. Kusumo explained that SMKK is a new field of study which was prompted by various work accidents in Palembang in 2017. Based on this, he formulated factors underlying construction safety. These include the desire for safety and avoidance of danger, the desire to avoid material losses due to accidents, compliance with legal requirements, and pressure from external parties and societal demands.
“Construction Safety is all engineering activities to support Construction Work in achieving safety, health, and sustainability standards (K4) that guarantee construction engineering safety, worker safety and health, public safety, and environmental safety. The Construction Safety Management System is the fulfilment of Safety, Health, and Sustainability Standards by ensuring construction engineering safety, occupational safety and health, public safety, and environmental safety,” Ir. Kusumo continued.
He also emphasized that besides SMKK, there is also SMK3, which is the Occupational Safety and Health Management System. Both are very important and we must understand when to implement them.
On a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, expressed, “This construction safety lecture is expected to enrich the knowledge of PPI students, especially those in the RPL program. Hopefully, the experience possessed by Ir. Kusumo can further broaden the students’ horizons.”
