Six FTUI Students Win Two Championships at CONSTRAIN 2024

FTUI students once again brought honour to the faculty and university by winning two championships at the national competition titled Competition of Industrial Engineering (CONSTRAIN) 2024. CONSTRAIN is a scientific competition that tests participants’ ability to solve business problems considering the scientific perspective of industrial engineering. The competition was organized by Hasanuddin University. CONSTRAIN lasted for two months, from December 2023 to February 2024 in Makassar.

Out of approximately 60 participants, there were two teams from FTUI participating in this competition, namely the Pomona team consisting of Kyan Widjaja, Siti Istiqomah Banurea, and Yolanda Katrina Sihaloho, and the CEES team consisting of Fathan Raja Isyrafi, Rainier Murad, and Revandya Akmal Khairan. These six students are Industrial Engineering students from the 2022 class.

The Pomona team won first place with their innovation titled “Utilization of Green Innovation: Implementation of BioGondok for TSR Solution and GHG Emissions.” BioGondok is an alternative fuel innovation aimed at reducing coal usage and minimizing waste that previously had no commercial value.

“Through the BioGondok solution, PT Semen Tonasa succeeded in reducing carbon emissions by 29% in 2060, increasing TSR by 24%, and enhancing zero carbon branding culture for the cement industry,” said Kyan.

Meanwhile, the CEES team, which secured the second position, came up with the idea titled “From Palm Oil to Green Energy: Utilization of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) as Alternative Fuel Resource (AFR) at PT Semen Tonasa.” In line with sustainability and energy efficiency goals, this idea provides a comprehensive analysis of PT Semen Tonasa’s strategy in integrating the alternative fuel palm oil mill effluent (POME) to increase the Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR) to 24%.

“By utilizing abundant palm oil waste in South Sulawesi, PT Semen Tonasa can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, optimize production processes, minimize environmental impact, and increase profitability,” explained Fathan.

FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU., expressed his appreciation, “I congratulate Kyan Widjaja, Siti Istiqomah Banurea, and Yolanda Katrina Sihaloho for winning first place and Fathan Raja Isyrafi, Rainier Murad, and Revandya Akmal Khairan for securing second place at CONSTRAIN 2024. This achievement is certainly a pride for FTUI. Hopefully, what Fathan and his team have done can inspire other students and the wider community to continue innovating.”
