Coordination Meeting for Future Engineers Curriculum Implementation

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) held a Coordination Meeting on Faculty Courses – Future Engineers Curriculum. The main discussion of this meeting was about implementing the new curriculum – the Future Engineers Curriculum- as well as the latest Rector’s Regulations for conducting undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. The meeting was attended by the Manager of Education, Dr. Nyoman Suwartha, S.T., M.T., M.Agr., and the educational unit staff.

In the meeting, Dr. Nyoman Suwartha emphasized that the Future Engineers Curriculum is expected to be implemented this year, with the initial plan to be applied in 2025. This is part of the effort to update the 2020 curriculum. Over the past two years, FTUI has conducted benchmarking with several international universities to refine the Future Engineers Curriculum.

The implementation of the Future Engineers Curriculum includes several important indicators, such as the addition of four new courses: Introduction to Engineering Design, Computational Thinking, Data Analytics, and Sustainability, Occupational Health, and Safety. These new courses are designed to be mandatory faculty courses that can be taken by all study programs at FTUI to gain a comprehensive understanding of various critical aspects of future engineering.

“The hope is that these new courses will become an interactive platform that allows students from various departments at FTUI to meet annually for collaboration. Additionally, the integration of these courses into the curriculum also aims to align the curriculum with partner universities to facilitate double degree collaborations, as they have similar global courses,” said Dr. Nyoman.

With the increase in the number of FTUI students, there is a need to increase the number of lecturers for several faculty courses, particularly in mathematics, physics, and the Basic Courses in Engineering. The new policy requires, as much as possible, the use of internal FTUI lecturers as faculty course instructors from each study program. To select faculty course instructors, each department is asked to map the workload of young lecturers. However, if internal teaching staff are insufficient, lecturers will be recruited from other faculties.

According to the Higher Education Curriculum (KPT), faculties are required to create Orientation guidebooks (BOP) related to assessment or the implementation of research-based exams for master’s and doctoral programs, such as Periodic Seminar Courses. This includes the preparation of implementation guidelines, assessment rubrics, selection of supervisors, and exam guide templates.

FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, commented, “The implementation of the Future Engineering Curriculum is a significant step forward for FTUI. I am confident that the implementation of the Future Engineering Curriculum will bring many benefits to students and FTUI. We hope that students following this curriculum will have the competencies needed in the future and be ready to compete in the global arena.”
