Society of Petroleum Engineers UI Wins International Award at SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Universitas Indonesia (UI) Student Chapter (SC), consisting of 108 students from the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UI, has once again achieved international recognition by winning the 2024 Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapters in the Technical Dissemination category. SPE UI SC is the only representative from Asia and the Middle East to receive this award in this category.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., expressed his appreciation for this remarkable achievement. “The achievement of SPE UI SC in winning the 2024 Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapters is a great pride for the Faculty of Engineering UI. This award is a testament to the contribution and hard work of the members and the excellent guidance of the faculty advisors in enhancing technical competence through various technical dissemination activities,” he said.

The achievement of SPE UI SC was announced on July 3, 2024, as part of the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition. Among more than 450 SPE SCs worldwide, SPE UI SC was selected as one of the 23 best SPE SCs to receive this award and the only holder of size label F, involving more than 1,000 participants in various activities.

President of SPE UI SC, Muhammad Kahfi Arifansyah, stated that this award is tangible proof of SPE’s commitment to enhancing the technical competence of its members and making a real contribution to the energy and oil and gas industry. The Presidential Award for Outstanding Student Chapters is given to student chapters that rank in the top 10% and meet the requirements per award category and size range. The selection process involves submitting an annual report and going through two stages of selection, namely regional and international selection.

The award has five categories: Community Involvement; Engaging, Retaining, and Growing Membership; Operations and Planning; Professional Development; and Technical Dissemination. The Technical Dissemination category includes activities aimed at improving the technical competence of members, such as field trips, internship programs, scientific writing competitions, team competitions, research programs, symposiums, and training courses.

During the 2023-2024 period, SPE UI SC implemented 64 work programs, 47 of which focused on technical dissemination. These activities involved 1,531 participants and included various events, such as company visits to 14 energy sector companies in oil and gas and collaborations with major companies for career development, such as annual recruitment by Schlumberger (SLB) and Baker Hughes.

“I hope that SPE UI SC will continue to be a pioneer in innovation and collaboration, and be able to present programs that are more beneficial and have a positive impact on all members. We also hope to continue to excel in international events, such as the PetroBowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier and Global Championship, bringing the good name of Universitas Indonesia to the global stage,” said Kahfi.

Currently, SPE UI SC consists of 27 boards of directors and 81 student staff from various departments at FTUI, including Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Civil Engineering (International Program). SPE UI SC is guided by two FTUI lecturers, Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, S.T., M.T., and Muhammad Ibadurrohman, S.T., M.T., Ph.D.

“In the future, the SPE UI SC team will continue its journey in the PetroBowl Asia Pacific Regional Qualifier, which will be held on July 25-27, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Additionally, SPE UI SC will participate in the Global Championship, which will take place on September 24-27 in New Orleans, USA. We hope SPE UI SC can give its best and bring home the championship title again,” said Dr. Bambang.
