FTUI Doctor Utilizes Artificial Intelligence to Ensure the Safety of Oil and Gas Pipelines in Indonesia

The oil and gas industry in Indonesia faces significant challenges in maintaining the safety and efficiency of its pipeline systems. To address these issues, Taufik Aditiyawarman, a Doctoral student in Metallurgical & Material Engineering at FTUI, has completed a dissertation discussing the use of risk-based inspection methods supported by machine learning and deep learning technologies.

His dissertation, titled “Screening and RBI (Risk Based Inspection) Assessment on Oil and Gas Pipeline Systems in Indonesia to Support Production Safety Using Machine Learning and Deep Learning,” highlights how advanced technology can be applied to predict pipeline failures and provide more effective and economical maintenance solutions.

In his research, Taufik used a 16-inch diameter ex-spool sample, tested through various methods such as metallography, Optical Emission Spectrometry (OES), Tensile Test, Hardness Test, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). These tests aimed to identify material composition and the main causes of pipeline failure.

To analyze the complex data, Taufik applied machine learning algorithms such as AdaBoost, Random Forests, and Gradient Boosting. K-Means Clustering and Gaussian Mixture Model techniques were used to classify pipeline failure risks into three groups based on their risk levels: low, medium, and high. This research was also validated using the k-fold cross-validation method to ensure the accuracy and consistency of the developed model.

One of the significant findings of this research is the ability of AI technology to quickly and accurately identify types of pipeline failures. For instance, the machine learning model developed by Taufik can predict corrosion levels and damage locations on pipelines, enabling maintenance teams to take preventive measures before failures occur. This technology can also provide more efficient maintenance recommendations, such as the appropriate use of protective materials and optimal inspection schedules.

Additionally, the research shows that AI-supported risk-based inspection methods can reduce maintenance costs and the risk of pipeline failures, which could lead to significant losses. By implementing this technology, the oil and gas industry in Indonesia can enhance operational safety and reliability, ensuring the sustainability of energy production in the future.

This dissertation is expected to serve as a reference for the oil and gas industry in Indonesia in adopting AI technology for risk management and pipeline maintenance. Implementing these methods will not only improve operational safety but also provide significant economic benefits for companies. With his dissertation, Taufik earned a Doctorate in Metallurgical and Material Engineering with the distinction of Summa Cum Laude and a GPA of 4.00. Dr. Taufik became the 71st doctoral graduate in the Metallurgical and Material Engineering program and the 564th to graduate from FTUI.
