The Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), is holding the 2024 Architecture Thesis Exhibition from July 4 to August 16, 2024. This free exhibition, open to the public, is located on the 1st to 3rd floors of the FTUI Architecture Department, UI Campus, Depok.
The exhibition is supported by seven supervising lecturers: Prof. Yandi Andri Yatmo, S.T., M.Arch, Ph.D., Prof. Paramita Atmodiwirjo, S.T., M.Arch, Ph.D., Kristanti Dewi Paramita, S.Ars., M.A, Ph.D., Dr. Rini Suryantini, S.T., M.Sc, Ruth Kartika Purnasasmita, S.Ars., M.Ars., Defry Agatha Ardianta, S.T., M.T., and Bramasta Putra Redyantanu, S.T., M.T. Showcasing the final projects of twenty architecture students from the class of 2020, this exhibition presents a different approach to exploring the meaning of architecture.
Ganesh, one of the 2020 Architecture students, explained that the exhibition has four main themes: Another World, Ecology, Technology, and Everyday Objects. “In general, there are four themes we have taken. From these themes, we have arguments that we try to demonstrate through graphics and our works,” he said.
Another exhibitor, Arla, added, “The biggest challenge in the process was that this final project is somewhat different from what we studied before. Architecture is generally known for building design, but in this final project, the approach we used is more abstract with diverse themes. Through this exhibition, we want to convey to the public that architecture is not just about designing buildings but also about the thinking process that results in the works we present now.”
This thesis exhibition emphasizes that architecture is not just about utility or aesthetics but is also a profound reflection on the world and humanity’s place in it. The displayed works dispel conventional notions of architecture being limited to buildings, proving its role as a medium of dialogue, innovation, and cultural exchange.
Kristanti Dewi Paramita, S.Ars., M.A, Ph.D., lecturer and Secretary of the Architecture Department, highlighted the importance of this exhibition in building UI’s architectural profile at the national and international levels. “We invite many guests from other universities. This year, for example, we invited lecturers from UNDIP to provide direct feedback to our students. Our students’ final projects are somewhat different from other universities that might produce complex buildings like hotels. In this final project, we position the value of UI’s Architecture Department through design thinking, starting with the ideas and theories to be explored further in terms of design.”
The 2024 FTUI Architecture Thesis Exhibition invites visitors to explore the potential of architecture as a catalyst for change, a reflection of identity, and a bridge between the past, present, and future. Through these works, it is hoped to redefine the understanding of space, form, and function of architecture, presented not only as a backdrop for everyday life but also as a factor that plays a role in changing and shaping the world.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., Dean of FTUI, expressed his appreciation for this thesis exhibition. “This exhibition not only demonstrates another role of architecture that can be more than just building design but also opens up new opportunities for further discussion and collaboration in the field of architecture. With various themes and diverse approaches, this exhibition provides new insights and exploration on how architecture reflects identity and connects different periods,” he said.
