Universitas Indonesia (UI) continuously strives to enhance N-Helix collaborations locally and globally. These global collaborations are primarily conducted with prestigious universities in various countries. The Faculty of Engineering (FT) at UI has taken strategic steps to develop international partnerships by identifying and mapping out partner universities with outstanding programs and research that align with the faculty’s vision and mission. Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, stated that these strategic initiatives open new opportunities for students and strengthen their position in the international higher education arena.
“UI’s ranking as the Best Engineering Campus in Indonesia by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) for two consecutive years (2023 and 2024) has facilitated our efforts to initiate and open international collaboration opportunities. This is in line with FTUI’s commitment to continually innovate and improve the quality of education and research to advance science and technology, ultimately positively impacting society’s progress and welfare,” said Prof. Heri.
This ease of establishing collaboration opportunities was demonstrated during the FTUI delegation’s visit to several prestigious universities in the UK, including the University of Exeter, the University of Leeds, the University of Glasgow, and the University of Strathclyde. Led by the Vice Dean for Education, Research, and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yanuar, M.Eng., M.Sc., the FTUI delegation included Dr.-Ing. Dalhar Susanto, Manager of Cooperation, Ventures, and Alumni, and Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Secretary of the Civil Engineering Department, visited these partners from July 21 to 29, 2024.
During the visit, FTUI signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the University of Exeter, aiming to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a Double Degree program with a 2+2 scheme (2 years of study at UI and 2 years at the partner university) in the Industrial Engineering program, as well as a Single Degree program with a fee-paying study abroad scheme. Additionally, this agreement includes developing research collaborations and other academic partnership opportunities.
FTUI also signed an Agreement of Implementation (AoI) with the University of Strathclyde, offering FTUI students the opportunity to participate in a Double Degree program with a 2+2 scheme in the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs. Students who meet the academic requirements in their final semester at the University of Strathclyde have the opportunity to continue to a master’s program, which can be completed in one year. The University of Strathclyde also offers a 15% tuition fee discount for Double Degree and Single Degree students.
Prof. Yanuar said, “The signing of agreements with the University of Exeter and the University of Strathclyde is a step towards expanding academic opportunities for FTUI students. In addition to providing access to internationally standard education, these agreements also offer more comprehensive and adequate support for studying abroad. We hope that these collaborations will continue and evolve, both academically and in research.”
In addition to these agreements, the FTUI delegation also visited the University of Leeds and the University of Glasgow to discuss various aspects of collaboration, including the development of Double Degree programs, monitoring and evaluating the ongoing Double Degree Master’s students with the University of Leeds, and exploring research collaboration opportunities. FTUI is also targeting the University of Manchester to expand partnership networks and review other potential international collaborations.
